Knicks Rebuffed by Hawks With Latest Move Amid NBA Rumors

The New York Knicks aren't having much luck with their head coaching search.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday the Knicks were denied permission to speak with four head coaches elsewhere around the league about the vacancy at the top of their staff this week.

One of those denials came from the Atlanta Hawks.

"The Knicks asked to speak with Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder but were firmly denied, sources told ESPN," Charania wrote. "Snyder completed his third season in Atlanta."

In addition to a request to speak with Quin Snyder, the Knicks also asked permission to talk to the Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd, Houston Rockets' Ice Udoka and Minnesota Timberwolves' Chris Finch.

But those Knicks requests were all denied.

The Knicks are searching for a new head coach after they surprisingly fired Tom Thibodeau following the team's loss to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Although it was a disappointing series defeat, it was the farthest the Knicks advanced in the postseason since 2000.

Snyder became the Hawks head coach in February 2023. He led the team to a 10-11 mark during the final quarter of the 2022-23 season. The past two seasons, the Hawks have posted a 76-88 record under Snyder.

Prior to his current tenure in Atlanta, Snyder was head coach of the Utah Jazz from 2014-22. In eight seasons, he posted a .585 win percentage.

Under Snyder, the Jazz advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals three times. The team also earned three other playoff berths.

Snyder was an assistant with the Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers before joining the Jazz. He also served as the Missouri Tigers men's basketball head coach from 1999-2006.
