Arsenal have been pipped to the post in their pursuit of Leroy Sane, with Galatasaray now leading the chase.

Sane has become a hot property this summer transfer window as his contract with Bayern Munich is on the brink of ending, and Arsenal were among the clubs keen on snapping up the winger.

The saga of Sane's contract has been a long-drawn-out affair at Bayern this year, with constant whispers about his future. The Bavarian bigwigs were hopeful of keeping the winger on board beyond his contract's end date of 30 June, but that optimism has now evaporated as he looks set to move to the Super Lig title winners.

The 29 year old will now miss the Club World Cup, kicking off in the United States this weekend, to finalise a move elsewhere. A few Premier League clubs, as well as Napoli, Saudi outfit Al-Hilal and Fenerbahce all showed interest, but it's Galatasaray who seem to have won the race for the German international.

L'Équipe reports that Arsenal have bowed out after Sane's agents jetted off to Istanbul to thrash out a deal. Sky Sports Germany reveals he's verbally agreed to join the Turkish team as a free agent once his Bayern contract ends on 30 June.

He is set to sign a three-year deal with Galatasaray worth €15million (£12.72m) annually, says the Mirror, which roughly translates to a whopping £475,000 per week.

Galatasaray face losing their standout player Victor Osimhen at the end of the season when his Napoli loan stint ends. Many clubs, including ones in England's top league are swooning over Osimhen and planning an offer.

With him gone, Leroy Sane is next in line for Galatasaray stardom. Meanwhile, the transfer update is bad news for the Gunners, who targeted Sane in their pursuit of stronger wingmen, attracted by his lower fee compared to Bilbao star Nico Williams, plus his past history with gaffer Mikel Arteta at Man City.

Early on, after Sane's move to Bayern, he spoke highly of how Arteta had impacted his career. "I can just say positive things about Mikel Arteta. Since we started working together, he has helped me a lot on the pitch," he told The Independent.

"He tried to improve my football, he told me what I did good and what I did wrong, and he tried to work on it. Next to Pep, they both really helped me and improved me, to bring me to the next level.

"Even now, at Arsenal, for me, you can see he's doing a great job. You can see he has a concept, a way that he wants to play, a way that he wants his team to play, and obviously, it will take some time until everybody really understands it. I think he will do a great job as a [head] coach too."
