"I am told" - Journalist says many insiders are "surprised" by who Chelsea have let go

Chelsea have undergone a very busy summer already, following their qualification for the Champions League next season, with Enzo Maresca's side also about to take part in the Club World Cup.

Chelsea hold numerous talks with transfer targets

The deadline to sign players before the CWC has now passed, but if Chelsea wish to add more new signings to their squad midway through the tournament, they'll be able to take advantage of a unique player registration period from June 27 to July 3 - if they've not been knocked out by that time.

The west Londoners are still working beyond the Club World Cup transfer deadline.

If they're happy with their current squad for this summer's tournament, which could yield £97 million worth of prize money if they win the competition, then BlueCo still have plenty of time to strengthen before the next Premier League season, with the next summer deadline day coming on September 1.

The window is set to reopen on June 16, which gives Chelsea an opportunity to revisit deals for key targets who they couldn't get through the door in time for 7pm on Tuesday.

Chelsea couldn't come to terms with AC Milan over a move for France international goalkeeper Mike Maignan, with the Blues pulling out of a pre-CWC transfer after refusing to pay Milan's asking price for their captain.

Similar can be said of Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, considering Chelsea had a whopping three bids rejected for the Englishman as Niko Kovac's side kept demanding more money (Florian Plettenberg).

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea go back in for either man, but these negotiations would have undoubtedly left a sour taste in the mouths of Stamford Bridge officials, who frantically raced to get them through the door in time for the CWC.

If they do go back in for Maignan in particular, who is believed to be keen on a move to Chelsea, their extensive backlog of keepers surely means a couple will be heading out of the exit door. Well, one already has.

Marcus Bettinelli leaves Chelsea with insiders "surprised"

Man City completed a deal for goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, who signed a one-year contract at Eastlands after departing Chelsea.

Despite making just one first-team appearance for Chelsea during his long stint at Cobham, the 33-year-old was a deeply popular figure behind-the-scenes, and the presence of a third-choice keeper is debated by many as an underrated supportive role in any top-level squad.

Scott Carson, for instance, was a beloved member of the City squad under Pep Guardiola in that regard, so much so that they saw fit to replace the departed fan favourite with Bettinelli to help fill the void.

In response to this confirmed news, journalist Graeme Bailey has told Manchester City News that Chelsea insiders are shocked by the club's decision to let Bettinelli leave - explaining the feeling behind his exit from behind-the-scenes.

"They are very happy with him,” said Bailey about City announcing Bettinelli’s arrival.

“He’s got some big shoes to fill at City, with Scott Carson having been a hugely popular figure. I am told many are surprised Chelsea were willing to let Bettinelli leave Stamford Bridge.”
