Manchester City close in on agreement to sign Arsenal-linked midfielder: Reports

Manchester City are reportedly on the verge of reaching an agreement for Rosenborg star Sverre Nypan, a target for Arsenal. Nypan, a product of the Rosenborg youth team, has been pursued by several clubs over the last few months.

After a forgettable 2024-25 campaign, Manchester City have been heavily involved in the summer transfer window. They recently signed Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Rayan Cherki from AC Milan, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Olympique Lyon, respectively.

Sverre Nypan was linked with a move to Arsenal in January before Aston Villa came into the picture after reaching the Champions League quarterfinals. City recently entered the fray for Nypan, and it now looks like the 18-year-old’s future is at the Etihad Stadium.

According to The Athletic, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are close to reaching an agreement with Rosenborg for Sverre Nypan's signature, which would be a record fee for a player from the Norwegian league. The report adds that Nypan is expected to go out on a season-long loan to continue his development.

Nypan is renowned for his versatility on the pitch. While he primarily plays as a central midfielder, he can also play as a centre-forward and an attacking midfielder. He has already registered 70 senior games for Rosenborg, who are third in the Norwegian top-flight, Eliteserien, after 11 games. He is also a squad member of the Norway U-21 side.

While Nypan may not immediately break into the first team at Manchester City should they sign him, he is a prospect for the future for the Cityzens. Meanwhile, his current contract with Rosenborg will expire in December 2026, and his current market value is €12 million, as per Transfermarkt.

“He has always made good decisions” - Former Rosenborg academy manager says Manchester City and Arsenal target understands the game

It is no surprise that Manchester City and Arsenal expressed interest in Sverre Nypan. The teenage prodigy has emerged as one of the most promising players in Norwegian football.

Nypan’s former Rosenborg academy manager, Roar Vikvang, recently spoke highly of him, telling Sky Sports:

“He was the number one player at his age in the region. Already at that age, he had been out visiting clubs abroad. It was the work of me and the club to sign him. What was most important for him was how he could continue to develop as a player. It was 2020, so he was turning 14. Already at that time, he was so mature for his age.

“He was just searching for a place where he could continue to develop because, from my point of view, there was no other option than trying to get all the way [top level]. But he hasn’t been in a hurry. He has always made good decisions," he added.

Vikvang continued:

“Already at that date, he was a good player technically but what I think is very different from the other players was the mentality. How mature he is, how he understood the game. Not only his own position and what he was doing, but the other players. He could do thing do things together to make the whole team perform. It was unusually early.”
