Viktor Gyokeres 'decides between Man Utd and Arsenal' after meeting with owners

Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres is reportedly edging closer to a Premier League switch, with his agent making significant strides towards securing a move. Manchester United supporters might be disheartened to hear that the player's representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, is said to have held discussions with Arsenal's hierarchy.

Tensions have escalated in Lisbon after reports surfaced that Gyokeres is dissatisfied with Sporting, despite becoming a talismanic figure over two seasons. The Swedish forward believed a 'gentleman's agreement' was in place for his departure at approximately £59million this summer.

However, following an impressive tally of 97 goals in 102 matches for Sporting, the club is said to be holding out for his £70m buyout clause to be met in full. This has led to speculation that Gyokeres may resort to strike action to secure his desired transfer during this window.

CNN Portugal claim that Cetinkaya met with Arsenal's owners on Wednesday, aiming to push forward a deal. Last month, Arsenal delegates reportedly visited Lisbon to negotiate for the prolific striker. The latest developments indicate that discussions are "very advanced."

While there have been previous meetings between Arsenal and Sporting representatives, it now appears that talks have taken a more concrete turn, potentially paving the way for an agreement. Reports indicate that joining Arsenal has been Gyokeres' top choice "from the very beginning."

This could leave Ruben Amorim, United's boss who lured him from Coventry City to Portugal, out in the cold.

Gyokeres' close associates have expressed their desire for him to stay put in Lisbon. His uncle Chris confirmed at the Taca de Portugal final, where Gyokeres played a pivotal role and celebrated victory, that the family advised the ace to maintain his current situation.

Speaking about their affinity for Lisbon, he said: "Yes, very much. Yesterday at dinner, we decided that he has to stay."

Gyokeres' partner Ines Aguiar is also persuading him to commit to another season with Sporting amid burgeoning transfer intrigue. She "promised" to exert every effort to sway the star into embracing a third term with the club in conversation with Portuguese media.

Gyokeres did detail his preference for vibrant lifestyles abroad: "After living in a warm country, it would be difficult. In Sweden, people work hard during the week and only socialize on the weekends. Here, there is more life during the week. They have dinners with friends and a glass of wine on Monday. I like that."

Arsenal appear to have steamed ahead in the race, potentially leaving Manchester United behind as they progress in negotiations. Eager to compensate for previous disappointments, Mikel Arteta's team is keen to bolster the squad with a top-tier striker before the new season kicks off.

Gyokeres, 27, is not the only striker believed to be on Arsenal's radar. The club has been strongly linked with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko this summer, with the club's top brass seemingly keen on the Slovenian international.

However, recent developments suggest that Gyokeres remains the preferred choice if Arsenal have their way. This could leave United reeling if a direct competitor snaps up one of the most sought-after talents on the market.
