Manchester United have reached a new agreement with veteran keeper Tom Heaton. He has extended his stay at the club into his 40s.
Tom Heaton Set to Sign New One-Year Extension
After agreeing to a new one-year deal, Tom Heaton is staying with Manchester United. The 39-year-old goalkeeper verbally accepted a new contract. The new deal will be finalised shortly. His current deal was set to expire at the end of June. But, he will now continue his career into his 40s with the Red Devils.
He has had two different spells with Utd in his career. But, the experienced England international has never featured in a Premier League match for the club. He first joined Man United in 2005. He had several loan stints at clubs like Cardiff City, Swindon Town, and QPR before moving on.
Then, he returned in 2021 as a backup option but has mainly featured in friendly matches and tours. That includes last season’s Asia tour.
Coaching Role Delayed as Tom Extends Playing Career
Many were expecting Heaton to move into a coaching role at the club. But, Utd have decided to keep him on as a squad player for the upcoming season. The idea of him taking on coaching duties is still on the table, but only in the long run.
He will remain part of the first-team squad for one more campaign. Now, the club gears up for a friendly clash against Leeds in Stockholm on July 19.
Utd have already released nine players, including veterans Jonny Evans and Christian Eriksen. This shows a summer rebuild under new manager Ruben Amorim is in works.
Though, Tom made a blunder during the Hong Kong tour game. But, the club has decided to stick with him for another year. They are valuing his leadership and experience in the dressing room.
