Everton have started their summer recruitment drive with the permanent capture of Carlos Alcaraz after a successful spell on loan. But there remains a lot for David Moyes to do.
Little wonder, then, the Blues boss is getting linked with players left, right and centre, whether it be Manchester City pair Jack Grealish and James McAtee, or Villarreal rising star Thierno Barry.
But there are also pressing contract situations to sort, most pertinently Idrissa Gueye, who alongside Everton team-mate Iliman Ndiaye, starred as Senegal secured a stunning 3-1 win at the City Ground last night over woeful England, whose decision to rest Jordan Pickford backfired.
There is still an expectation that Gueye and club captain Seamus Coleman will pen new deals but it remains to be seen if Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane stay or walk away as free agents come July 1.
Meanwhile, Moyes' predecessor in the Everton hotseat, Sean Dyche, has been linked with the soon-to-be vacant manager's role at Brentford, whose current boss Thomas Frank is set to take over at Tottenham Hotspur, who could be about to step up their interest in Jarrad Branthwaite.

Everton backed to make two transfers as summer priority identified - 'Above all else'
Mohamed Diomande of Rangers
Former Everton captain Don Hutchison reckons Rangers’ Mohamed Diomande is ready for the Premier League and would make a great addition to David Moyes’ squad this summer.
When asked by Gambling Zone whether Diomande is ready to make a move to the Premier League, Hutchison, who played 89 games and scored 11 goals for Everton between 1998-2000, said:
“Yeah, I think so. And you can see what David Moyes is trying to do.
“He’s trying to add a little bit more legs and physicality in that midfield, which is what they need because they’ve got talented wide players. And at centre back, when James Tarkowski’s fit they’ll be pretty solid with Jake O’Brien and Jarrad Branthwaite as well.
“Diomande would be a good signing for Everton, and I like him. He’s done well at Rangers.”

Sunderland chief eyes talks with Everton-linked Neil
(Image: Getty Images)
Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has insisted that the club will hold talks with Dan Neil amid Everton transfer links.
Neil is about to end the final 12 months of his Stadium of Light contract and as Liverpool World report, Sunderland will undoubtedly be keen to tie one of their prized assets down to fresh terms as they prepare for life back in the Premier League with Everton and West Ham United among his suitors.
They cite the Northern Echo as quoting Speakman as saying:
“We do a contract review right across the group at the end of every season. I think we're in a strong position with the majority of the group this time around, especially with a lot of the players who have performed at a really high level.
“There are a couple there (Neil and Dennis Cirkin) whose contracts are reducing and we need to have a conversation around that and that will happen in the coming weeks. That’s part of trying to build the squad for next season.”

Koulibaly issues bold claim over Gueye's Everton future

Idrissa Gueye knows he is getting a new contract at Everton and is well worth the deal that will see him move with the Blues to Hill Dickinson Stadium, reckons his Senegal team-mate, Kalidou Koulibaly.
Senegal became the first African nation to defeat England when they triumphed 3-1 at the City Ground – home of Nottingham Forest – on Tuesday and following the game, the centre-back hailed his 35-year-old midfield colleague who was one of the visitors’ star men on an historic night, alongside another Blues colleague Iliman Ndiaye.
Gueye is one of four out-of-contract players at Everton this summer whose future remains unresolved but Koulibaly said: “Everybody knows Gana is a magnificent player – an amazing player. He knows that he is going to get what he deserves (a new contract) because he is a good player – he has made the story of Senegal and made the story of Everton this year.”

And now a report from his homeland suggests the Blues have made their move.

Everton linked with Ukrainian striker
Dynamo Kyiv striker Vladyslav Vanat has emerged as a target for Everton this summer, according to a report.
Goodison News say David Moyes is in desperate need of attacking reinforcements in the transfer window after his side finished with the fourth-lowest goals tally in the Premier League and they cite TaToTake as claiming that the Blues are interested in the 23-year-old alongside the likes of Fulham, Leeds and Sunderland.
Vanat has netted 48 goals in 112 matches for Dynamo, including 17 in 28 Ukrainian Premier Liga.

Sean Dyche return
Sean Dyche has been out of work since leaving Everton in January.
But if a new, exclusive report is to be believed, he could soon be back in the Premier League.
"Brentford are lining up Sean Dyche as a possible replacement for manager Thomas Frank, according to sources close to SportsBoom.
"But former Leicester City and Nottingham Forest Steve Cooper and ex-Wolves and Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil are also believed to be interested in the job if Frank does leave as expected.
"Danish boss Frank is currently locked in talks with Tottenham Hotspur to become their new manager following the brutal sacking of Ange Postecoglou this week."

Idrissa Gueye contract
If Everton ever needed a reminder of Idrissa Gueye's enduring talents then it came last night as he starred in Senegal's superb 3-1 win over England at the City Ground.
Iliman Ndiaye wasn't bad either but it was the performance of Gueye, who drove Senegal on from midfield, that really stood out.
Everton confirmed earlier this week they had offered a contract to the veteran.
But a later report from The Times suggested that Gueye was holding out for a two-year deal and not the one-year contract that has been offered.
He may be 35, but he is certainly not playing like one.

Everton get mixed Jack Grealish transfer verdict as other Man City deal weighed up
Everton are going to be linked with a lot of players this summer. It would be a surprise if any triggered as much debate as Jack Grealish, though.
The Manchester City man is reportedly a target for the Blues having fallen out of favour under Pep Guardiola. Grealish looks set to be left out of the City squad for the upcoming Club World Cup, casting serious doubt over his future.
So at 29, would he be worth a punt for the Toffees? Or would it send the wrong message at the start of a new era? We asked our writers for their thoughts.

Why a move for Jack Grealish might have to wait

Jack Grealish is a name that keeps on popping up on the Everton side of the transfer rumour mill at the moment. The club are said to be one of a number tracking the potential availability of the 29-year-old, who appears to be out-of-favour over at the Etihad.
In this latest piece on the potential for a Blues move, I discuss how if this was to be a serious pursuit for Everton, it may be the back end of the summer before they can really make a move.

Where will DCL be next season?
Dominic Calvert-Lewin during the Premier League match between Everton and Ipswich Town at Goodison Park (Image: Visionhaus/Getty Images)
Where will Dominic Calvert-Lewin end up this summer? It's a big question, particularly given it could yet be at Everton. That does look increasingly unlikely given a deal is yet to have been reached, but Everton went on the record yesterday to say talks with his representatives are ongoing.
One alternative destination was Newcastle United, the club he came closest to a move to last summer only for the potential for a deal there to fall apart, partly because of Everton's hopes to lure winger Yankuba Minteh in the opposite direction.
A link-up with Eddie Howe does not appear to be on the cards now though.

Thierno Barry claim
Regular readers of this blog will know by now that Everton are being heavily linked with Villarreal and France Under-21 international forward Thierno Barry.
But a new claim from El Periódico Mediterráneo (via Sport Witness) suggests that the 22-year-old agent may be using Everton's alleged interest to hype up his client.
The report also claims that the Blues have not made a bid for Barry, who has a €40m release clause, although they are interested.

Calvert-Lewin latest
Our counterparts in the north-east have shared their stance on Calvert-Lewin - Newcastle is not looking like an option for the striker any more.
"The Magpies tracked the England international last season after pulling out of talks for the striker last July," writes Lee Ryder. "But despite his availability this summer and interest from Calvert-Lewin to head north, the Magpies are looking elsewhere."
Calvert-Lewin is set to become a free agent on June 30, with his contract with the Blues poised to expire.
Everton confirmed they were in talks with the striker over an extension on Monday, although the expectation now is that he will move on.

One right back upgrade is now off the market
One player I thought might end up on Everton's radar this summer was Tariq Lamptey. The 24-year-old is young, versatile and has plenty of experience over at Brighton. Everton need a right back and preferably one who can go forward - and Lamptey can do that.
He can also cover on the left, as he did for Brighton when Everton went down to the Amex in January.
He was out of contract this summer but, as you can see, the Seagulls have tied him down to a further year. He felt like he had the makings of a free upgrade.

Michail Antonio 'on Everton's radar'
Michail Antonio has admitted he is lucky to be alive after his horror crash in December (Photo by ADRIAN DENNIS/AFP via Getty Images)
This is the latest claim to come across my desk and it is one that, while I'm not surprised to see, I'm treating with an abundance of caution.
West Ham have not yet offered a new deal to Michail Antonio and, given his body of work with David Moyes, there is an easy line to draw between the 35-year-old and Everton.
I suspect this is not a deal that would be pursued unless we got deep into the window and Everton were short up top.
Also, Antonio was injured in a car crash in December and West Ham, though listing him as a free agent, have not ruled out him staying as he continues his recovery - having not yet played this year.
In a statement, the club said:
"Given Michail Antonio’s unique situation, following his serious road traffic accident in December 2024, there will be no formal decision and announcement on his future until such time that it is considered right and appropriate. However, as his current contract is also due to expire on 30 June, for the purposes of the Premier League Retained List procedure at the end of the 2024/25 season, Michail will be listed as a free transfer.
"As a long-serving, highly-respected player, and a much-loved member of the West Ham family, the Club’s absolute priority at this time is to support Michail personally in his journey to resume playing at the highest level."

How many more signings do Everton need this summer? (For me it is at least EIGHT)
With all of the above in mind, a few of here at the ECHO have taken a look at the squad and come up with what we think is needed.
Spoiler alert - even with Carlos Alcaraz already through the door, I get to eight players. At least.
They would include a new goalkeeper, a new right back, at the very least a player who can cover centre back/left back (if Keane goes, but if he stays would still require left back competition), two central midfielders, two right wing options and a forward.
Where do you start!?
This is what we all had to say

The full scale of the squad rebuild needed this summer
Harry Tyrer during the League One match between Huddersfield Town and Blackpool (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images)
Morning everyone, welcome to the first transfer deadline day of the summer! We are not expecting a mad dash for Blues business, just to be clear.
But it is clear Everton have business to do. A lot, in fact. In this piece I have taken a look at the squad as it stands from July onwards. I get to just 15 players - and that includes via promoting young goalkeeper Harry Tyrer and keeping hold of Youssef Chermiti, for whom I think a loan spell would be useful next year.
This is a big summer - not a bad one, this squad has needed an overhaul for some time and this is an opportunity. But it comes with complexity, and how the dominoes fall could take Everton in different directions.
The first of those dominoes are the players on expiring deals, of course - Seamus Coleman, Idrissa Gueye, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane. Coleman and Gueye feel the more likely to stay but, even if they do, a new right back and new central midfielders will be required.
Take a look at how I get to 15 players here

More Grealish claims
In the same report, Everton and Grealish are linked again.
"There is also understandable interest in his teammate Jack Grealish, although there remains huge uncertainty about what kind of financial commitments that would require and that is on the backburner until City’s stance becomes clearer," the piece continues.
The City winger is reported to be on around £300,000-a-week at the Etihad Stadium.
It's added that Moyes is hopeful the club's new stadium can be attractive to potential new transfers and that he's viewing the huge turnover in the squad as an opportunity for a fresh start.

McAtee links
A report from The I emerged on Monday evening that contained some transfer detail.
In there it's suggested Everton will hold a 'summit' to discuss transfers, as they prepare Dominic Calvert-Lewin's departure.
It's also claimed that the Blues are big admirers of Manchester City youngster James McAtee. The 22-year-old impressed in bursts last season, although is set to struggle for minutes in the coming campaign.
McAtee is said to have plenty of suitors though, with teams from across Europe showing an interest.

New Beto links
Beto has been linked with a move away from Everton throughout the campaign.
According to Sacha Tavolieri, Leeds have an interest in the striker. The Blues are said to want £21m for the 27-year-old.
Beto found a new lease of life under Moyes in the second half of the season, scoring eight goals in the Premeir League.
Everton look set to loose Calvert-Lewin at the end of his contract, so selling Beto would leave them without any senior centre-forward in the squad.

What Moyes said about Grealish
“He is a really good player and probably the best player in the Premier League at this time.
“He has done such a big job at that club (Villa) and is probably the best player in the league right now.”
That was David Moyes on Jack Grealish a few years ago, back when he was the main man at Aston Villa. Those words are being given some additional significance now amid the claims Everton are interested in the out-of-favour Manchester City star.
Here. Chris Beesley takes a look
