Zinedine Zidane, the legendary French midfielder and former Real Madrid boss, once rejected a massive offer to manage Man United. Reportedly, he rejected the offer even when the club handed him a blank cheque.
The story is shared by his former France teammate Marcel Desailly. He reveals how Zidane wasn’t tempted by money. Despite the chaos surrounding Utd during Erik ten Hag’s mixed reign, Zidane declined the high-profile job.
One major reason was reportedly his discomfort with speaking English fluently. That’s something he did not feel right to take over a Premier League club. He had a brilliant tenure with Real Madrid, winning three Champions League titles in a row. He also won two LaLiga trophies with the Los Blancos.
Zidane has shown he’s not quick to jump into just any role. Since leaving Madrid in 2021 without silverware that season, he’s been chased by big clubs across Europe.
Not Driven by Cash, Zidane Eyes France Role
Recently, the Frenchman turned down a jaw-dropping £84 million offer for a one-year deal from Saudi giants Al-Hilal. This shows again that he values purpose over pay.
According to Desailly, clubs struggle to lure Zidane because he’s highly selective about where he goes next. He appears to be seriously committed to coaching the French national team. He would love to help manage and lead Les Bleus, to a future place in football.
In 1998, he won the World Cup with France. But he wants to help write the next chapter of the France story as a coach. His relationship is great with French football history.
It will be interesting to see him taking the job for his national side one day.
