One Liverpool player has confirmed that he has discussed his future with the club, but it remains to be seen what will happen next.
The Reds have tied Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah down to new deals this year, but there are some key figures who are out of contract in the summer of 2026.
One of those is Andy Robertson, who has one year remaining on his deal, with Liverpool now having to decide if they want to hand him an extension.
Speaking to Sky Sports at his golf event on Thursday [via This Is Anfield], the 31-year-old gave an update on his future, admitting “discussions” have taken place.
“We have discussed [my future], of course we have. We’ve had good discussions, me and the club, but what the future holds, I’m not sure,” Robertson said.
“All I know is I fly off on holiday and it’s well needed. I need a rest after a long season, and then I look forward to pre-season. That’s all my focus is. I can’t look too far ahead, I never have done that so I’m not going to start doing that now.
“I know the position I’m in, I know I’ve only got a year left. A lot’s getting spoke about it, a lot’s getting said, but my pure focus is focussing on being a dad for the next couple of weeks and enjoying that time with the kids.
“Then I’ll try and come back in the best shape possible for pre-season and then we’ll see what the future holds when those decisions come.”
Should Robertson earn new Liverpool deal?
This is a tricky decision for Liverpool to make, considering Robertson has looked past his best over the past 12 months, albeit still playing at a good level compared to most left-backs.
There is no denying his quality and experience, with Micah Richards once describing him as “brilliant”, but he is now in his 30s, so a new deal would be a risk.
If Robertson was willing to sign a short-term contract, perhaps even just for one year, it could be the most sensible outcome for all parties.
It remains to be seen whether the Scot would be happy with that, however, and if he isn’t, an exit on a free transfer next summer may be the best solution.
