Manchester United must sell players to meet the goal of overhauling their sputtering attack, and to give themselves the room to address other problem areas of the squad - and while selling Alejandro Garnacho would mean big profits to help the club do just that, some readers in the Manchester Evening News readers in our comments section say that would be a short-sighted mistake.

United will have committed over £120 million early into the summer transfer window if Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo is added to the signing of Matheus Cunha. Ruben Amorim was said to have been given £100 million of net spend to rebuild the team, so player sales are a must to cover any remaining work to be done.

Garnacho has been a source of frustration to some over the past season, with some feeling that the young player has yet to deliver on his undoubted potential, and that proven Premier League heavyweights are needed now to heal United's injured pride. A sale would mean big profits for United, with Garnacho having come up through the academy system - something that many Premier League clubs are taking advantage of under tight Profit and Sustainability Rules requirements.

Some fans think that a transfer for Garnacho would be letting another top talent slip through the club's fingers. Reader Dambuster007 says: "Selling Garnacho is a mistake. It denies the next manager of a great talent."

Utd4me writes: "United will regret selling Garnacho, when under good coaching and a competent manager he becomes one of the best in the world."

Dothejobdoit says: "It would be a big mistake to sell Garnacho. He is one of the only players who can change a game if he is brought on as a sub. He terrorises defenses. Why let a young player with such talent leave to make another team better?"

Realperson adds: "Garnacho should stay and fight for his place. He’s one of the few who stays fit all season and is young enough to adapt to Amorim and the next United manager."

Others say a transfer would suit both player and club. Commenter Cho Jay says: "On one hand I'm not over the moon about Garnacho being sold, he has his merits and may get even better with maturity. On the other hand I can definitely see the logic in cashing in on him to facilitate what is now a desperate and drastic overhaul of the team...

"He's got a bit of an attitude, thinks he's chocolate, and in truth I'd hate to play in a team with him as he is too selfish. Him going is best for all in my opinion. And I wish him well, truly. But moving forward I think it's best. This is where our club is at. Thinking about how we once dealt with our young talent is futile... United need to do this kind of deal."

1968red writes: "Garnacho must go abroad if he goes, not helping our Premier League rivals get stronger."

Steverc16 is firmly in the Garnacho out camp: "It’s great we are buying, but start the dead-wood ejection. Onana, Maguire, Rashford, Sancho, Antony, Zirkzee, Rasmus, Bayindir, Malacia, Dalot, Shaw, Mount, Casemiro, Kobbie, Garnacho, - get rid of them all, start selling now."
