'I dreamed': Matheus Cunha finally speaks out after completing £62.5m transfer from Wolves to…

Matheus Cunha has now spoken for the first time since completing his move from Wolves to Manchester United.

Although Cunha’s final game for Wolves was their 1-1 draw against Brentford, the Molineux faithful knew for months that their Brazilian superstar was departing.

Cunha wanted a transfer to Manchester United to be wrapped up before the 2024/25 campaign drew to a close, with the Red Devils triggering his £62.5 million release clause.

Cunha even appeared to say goodbye to the Wolves fans in the final game and then penned a heartfelt post to the supporters, thanking them for their support over the years.

Now, after completing his lucrative switch to Old Trafford, the Brazil international has spoken for the first time.

Matheus Cunha’s first words after joining Manchester United

For all of his attitude and disciplinary troubles, Cunha is arguably one, if not the most technically gifted player to grace Wolves in the modern era.

He’s able to produce a moment of magic from nothing, usually dazzling outside the 18-yard box, while also showcasing his incredible levels of creativity.

Before leaving Compton, Cunha gave a Rolex to his teammate Joao Gomes, thanking his Brazilian compatriot for all the amazing moments they’ve shared together.

But all good things must come to an end, and after being unveiled as a United player, here’s what the 26-year-old said via the official Man United website.

“It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player. Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother’s house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt.”

When Cunha had the choice of Champions League football with Newcastle United, or European football at Aston Villa or Nottingham Forest, it was interesting to see him pick Man United as his next destination but now it’s clear why he has.

Cunha’s Wolves career in numbers

Without Cunha’s 15 Premier League goals in the 2024/25 campaign, it’s scary to think where they would be.

Particularly in the early parts of the season, the former Atletico Madrid forward was integral, scoring some vital goals in matches, notably Cunha’s brace against Fulham, where he was compared to Dennis Bergkamp.

He also became just the third Wolves player to hit double figures for goals in consecutive Premier League campaigns, which shows how influential he was.

92 matches

33 goals

15 assists

As shown by the above table, the maverick forward registered 48 goals and assists in 92 matches for the club, averaging just over one goal involvement every two games.

Now the mission for Wolves is to replace Cunha, and they’ll have several targets in mind; it’s just about whether they get the right one.
