Alexis Mac Allister shares which player he'd love Liverpool to sign, he's the 'best' in the world

Alexis Mac Allister has been one of Liverpool’s best players in the 2024-25 season, with the team often not doing as well when the midfielder wasn’t on the pitch.

The Argentina international has become the perfect box-to-box midfielder with Arne Slot relying upon him as one of his first-team regulars.

Mac Allister has formed a dynamic trio with Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch this season, which bodes well for next term, especially with Florian Wirtz’s transfer from Bayer Leverkusen now on the cusp of completion.

And, even though Liverpool were one of the best teams in England in the 2024-25 season, there are still a few areas within their squad that could do with strengthening, which is exactly what Slot is looking to do this summer.

Many players have been linked with a Liverpool move, but there’s one in particular who Mac Allister would seemingly love to have as part of the team.

Alexis Mac Allister would “love” Cristian Romero to join Liverpool this summer

Cristian Romero was a pivotal cog in Tottenham’s squad last term, that is, when he wasn’t injured, of course.

The Argentina international formed a dynamic duo with Micky van de Ven, and when both were available, Spurs’ back four was solid.

However, due to things such as injuries, Tottenham failed to perform in the Premier League, which resulted in Ange Postecoglou getting sacked.

This form, however, doesn’t mean that Romero’s performances were overlooked, as, while speaking to TNT Sports, Mac Allister admitted that he thinks his fellow countryman has been the “best” centre-back in the world for “several years.”

“Oh, Cuti [Romero], he’s a player I love,” Mac Allister said.

“The way he speaks and plays, sometimes you feel like he’s too much because he makes everything so easy. He gives me confidence. For me, he’s been the best centre back in the world for several years.”

Alexis Mac Allister didn’t forget about Virgil van Dijk

Mac Allister believing that Romero has been the best centre-back in the world for the last few years, will likely come as a shock to Liverpool fans.

At the moment, Virgil van Dijk is the Reds’ best defender by a country mile, and for as long as many can remember, the towering Dutchman has been lauded in the media as the best centre-back in the world.

Granted, in the same interview, Mac Allister did say that Van Dijk “commands a lot of respect,” so the midfielder didn’t forget about his teammate completely, but it’s certainly a surprise to see Romero named as the best.

Liverpool may well be on the lookout for a new centre back with Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande on their shortlist of targets, but even if Romero was an option, it’s unlikely that Slot would want to pursue him.

His unreliability plays a major part in that, and the fact that he’s 27 years old means that he’s entering his prime years and will undoubtedly command a massive weekly wage.

Of course, this is all just from Mac Allister, so no concrete links have been reported, but at the moment, it’s anyone’s guess what the Anfield outfit’s team could look like at the start of next term.
