Rasmus Hojlund is reportedly the subject of interest from Serie A rivals Inter Milan and Napoli in what could quickly develop into a battle in the market.

Arriving under the weight of a £72m transfer fee, Hojlund showed signs of struggling in his first months as a Man United striker. It took until Boxing Day of the 2023/24 campaign before his first Premier League goal to arrive and he finished strongly with 16 strikes in all competitions.

The 2024/25 season marked a transition from Erik ten Hag to Ruben Amorim and the Dane's struggles returned, managing to net only 10 in 52 appearances.

So venturing into the summer transfer window with no player safe from sale, Hojlund's situation is one in particular being watched closely.

Most recently, Italian champions Napoli have been said by Football Italia to have the 22-year-old on their list of striker targets. Previously with Atalanta before moving to Old Trafford, he scored nine in 32 outings in Serie A.

Though they fear rivals Inter - who they pipped to the title on the final day of the recent season - could have the upper hand financially, as they have previously been linked with interest.

Now, some may believe Hojlund's form over his two years in England might not be worthy enough to recoup the entire the fee they paid out two summers' ago.

Though by comparison, he appears to be presented favourably by the CIES Football Observatory's estimated transfer value calculations.

Taking into account numerous factors such as a player's age, contract length, previous transfer fees, performance metrics and demographic components, they have valued Man United's misfiring forward in the region of €66m-84m (£56m -71m).

Perhaps there could be hope in pitting the two Serie A clubs to fight for the striker, thus driving up whatever price Old Trafford chiefs would seek.

At the lower end of that range, £56m would present a loss of £16m whereas a £71m fee recouped is only £1m shy of the figure Hojlund arrived for.

The only drawback may be getting the man in question to move, as most recently he stated his expectation to still be at Man United next season.

"I have a contract until 2030, so I expect to play for Manchester United," he told Danish publication Bold. "I'm looking forward to going on a summer vacation, and then I'm fully dedicated to the project that's underway.

"I know I can't get much out of reading things. I know what the facts are, and that is that I have a contract with Manchester United until 2030.

"I expect to play there, so I'm just getting ready for some summer vacation and then hopefully a good pre-season."
