Why Coventry City will not benefit from the sale of Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal

English side Coventry City will reportedly not receive any money from Sporting CP’s sale of Viktor Gyokeres this summer, despite having negotiated a sell-on clause in his contract.

The 27-year-old Swedish striker has caught the attention of several top European clubs, including Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Juventus, with his impressive performances for Sporting.

Gyokeres’ sale could be significant, with a release clause of £84.7 million in his Sporting contract. However, Coventry City sold their sell-on clause to Sporting last summer for €1 million (£843,500), waiving their right to a future transfer windfall.

The clause was initially worth 15% of any profit on the initial fee paid by Sporting, which could have netted Coventry City a substantial amount.

The Championship side had stood to gain 15% of any profit on the initial £17.5 million fee paid by Sporting, plus add-ons based on Gyokeres’ performance.

However, with the sale of the sell-on clause, Coventry City will not benefit financially from Gyokeres’ potential sale.

Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase for Gyokeres’ signature, with the striker reportedly preferring the Gunners over other interested clubs.

An official offer from Arsenal is expected, although reports suggest the club’s preference is to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.

The transfer window continues to heat up with Gyokeres’ future remaining uncertain. With Manchester United also in the mix, the competition for his signature is fierce. Despite Coventry City’s lack of financial gain from the sale, Gyokeres’ impressive performances have undoubtedly increased his market value.

Arsenal’s interest in Gyokeres is part of their efforts to bolster their squad this summer. The Gunners are prioritizing signings in key positions, including striker, central midfielder, and winger. With Gyokeres’ impressive goal-scoring record, he could be a valuable addition to any team.
