Former Man Utd manager honoured with an OBE, 'it shows that...'

David Moyes has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Prince of Wales.

Although former Manchester United manager David Moyes won’t be remembered too fondly for his time at Old Trafford, there is no denying that he has had a brilliant career as a football manager.

Moyes built a reputation for himself as a Steady Eddie at Everton between 2002 and 2013, before replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at United.

After a short spell at United, Moyes went on to manage Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham before returning to Everton.

The highlight of Moyes’ managerial career came in 2023 when he guided West Ham to Europa Conference League glory.

Moyes returned to Everton in January and helped them secure safety from relegation, after a dire start to the season under Sean Dyche.

Under Moyes, Everton held United to a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park following goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.

Moyes, 62, guided West Ham to their first major trophy in 43 years when they lifted the Europa Conference League in 2023.

He was among the list of names on the King’s New Year Honours list, published in December, and on Wednesday, he received his award at a ceremony conducted by the Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle.

“It was a great honour to be given an OBE today. It was a really special day for me and my family,” Moyes said, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“My dad was previously awarded an MBE, and now I’ve got an OBE too, so it’s something we are all really proud of as a family.

“Bringing a trophy to West Ham, I think was huge, and I’ve been really fortunate that I’ve been able to manage and stay in the game for such a long time.”

This recognises the contribution Moyes has made to football throughout his career. He spent 19 years as a player — starting his career at Celtic before representing Cambridge United, Bristol City, Shrewsbury Town, Dunfermline Athletic and Preston North End.

It wasn’t until 1998, aged 34, that Moyes was turned to management as he took the job at Preston.

Now, we are talking about Moyes having won an OBE on top of three LMA Manager of the Year awards and overseeing a total of 716 Premier League games as things stand.

Moyes’ record at Manchester United

It has been over 11 years since United sacked Moyes.

Moyes was United manager for 51 matches, with the team winning just 27 of those and losing 15. During that time the Red Devils scored 86 goals and conceded 54.

United’s form was so bad that Moyes didn’t last a full season in charge and was replaced by Ryan Giggs on an interim basis until the end of the season.

United would later turn to Louis van Gaal to replace Moyes as manager.
