They've had success here before, and earlier this offseason COO Stephen Jones said it could be on their agenda again. Now he and the Dallas Cowboys front office are living up to their word, and hoping it can be another success.
The Cowboys are welcoming a player from the United Football League (UFL) for a workout at The Star.
In fact, for defensive tackle DeVere Levelston is is more like a welcome back, as he has strong ties to the area.
Levelston is a graduate of football powerhouse DeSoto High School in the south-Dallas area. He stayed home to play college ball for four seasons at SMU from 2020-2023 after starting out at Tyler Junior College east of the Metroplex.
“We’re watching that in terms of those guys doing a good job over there and we’ll see if there’s anybody who can help us there and we’ll just keep our eyes on what might become available," Jones said earlier this offseason.
After a standout start to the spring season with the Memphis Showboats, Levelston has caught the eye of his hometown NFL team and earned a workout invite.
Levelston signed with the Showboats in April, and has turned into an immediate impact player in the UFL, totaling 13 tackles and two sacks in five games played.
The Cowboys, who won't turn down any opportunity to find run-stopping help, could turn to Levelston's impressive 82.9 defensive grade by Pro Football Focus to beef up the D-line.
If he were to earn a roster spot, this would be the fourth UFL alum to find their way into the NFL with the Cowboys. Cornerback Josh Butler and All-Pro's KaVontae Turpin and Brandon Aubrey each spent time in the spring league before finding a role with "America's Team".
Levelston, 24, also already has some NFL experience. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an un-drafted free agent last season and spent the year on the practice squad.
Dallas wraps up mandatory minicamps this week before a long break from team activities until training camp in late July. This time will be spent examining players like Levelston who could work their way into a camp invite with a solid showing.
