Wayne Rooney lost his job as Plymouth Argyle boss late in 2024, but the League One side may now move for another former Manchester United player.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s former Manchester United players are dotted all over the game in managerial positions.
Michael Carrick recently lost his job at Middlesbrough, but the likes of Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes and Mark Robins remain in management.
Wayne Rooney isn’t quite so fortunate, having seen his managerial career take a few hits since initially showing so much promise at Derby County.
Spells with D.C. United and Birmingham City didn’t work out, before Rooney was sacked by Plymouth Argyle in December 2024.
Rooney spent just seven months in the job, winning only five of his 25 games in charge of the Pilgrims before being axed.

Plymouth Argyle set to appoint former Manchester United ace Tom Cleverley
Miron Muslic arrived to replace Rooney, but he has now taken the Schalke job despite suffering relegation from the Championship.
Argyle have been weighing up potential replacements for Muslic, and they appear to be appointing one of Rooney’s former United teammates.

Sky Sports report that Argyle are on the verge of appointing Tom Cleverley as their new boss.
Cleverley recently left Watford but will quickly return to the dugout, having been chosen as Argyle’s new man.
The 35-year-old won 20 of his 59 games in charge of the Hornets, recording a 34% win rate during his time at Vicarage Road.
Cleverley drew 2-2 with Rooney’s Argyle side in November 2024 but now follows in the footsteps of his former United teammate with a move to Devon.
Tom Cleverley to face former United players
Argyle will be looking to make an immediate return to the Championship after suffering relegation.
Cleverley will have genuine hope of achieving that goal, and he will be facing some former United players along the way.
As mentioned earlier, former United defender Steve Bruce is in charge at Blackpool, who finished in the top half last season.
Former United talent Richie Wellens is in charge of Leyton Orient, while Lee Grant has been appointed as manager of Huddersfield Town.
Paul McShane has joined Grant at Huddersfield, reuniting after they crossed paths together at Old Trafford.
Darren Ferguson will lead Peterborough United into battle once again, meaning we will see several battles between former United players in League One.
Cleverley will need to keep most of his Argyle squad together after relegation but will sense a major opportunity to get his managerial career back on track after leaving Watford.
