Manchester United are caught in the eye of a transfer storm with Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres vying for a move to the Premier League, though word has started to emerge of interest in a new striker.
Managed by Ruben Amorim at the Estadio Jose Alvalade over the course of 2023/24 plus the first months of last season, 27-year-old Gyokeres scored 66 of his 97 goals for Sporting. It is that contribution towards the winning of three trophies that have elevated his status as an elite striker, all building up to the current summer transfer window.
Man United, having wrapped up top No.10 target Matheus Cunha's arrival, have turned their attention towards adding a confident goalscorer to their ranks and even without Champions League football to offer, have been linked with making a daring move for Gyokeres.
However, such a plan could quickly come undone based on the latest word out of Portugal.
Mais Futebol have provided the bombshell claim that Premier League rivals Arsenal have now submitted an offer for the Sweden international.
It is said to be a guaranteed sum below €60m (£51m) with bonuses that will take the overall agreement higher. This is far below the €80m (£68.1m) the Portuguese champions are reportedly holding out for.
Such a development would truly be astonishing as sister site football.london had gathered intel that it was RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, 21, that the North London club were making progress towards signing have elected he to be the top target having initially done homework on the terms for both he and Gyokeres' deals.
Yet, it might not be as truly damaging as first thought. Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg would suggest that Man United have pivoted their attention to Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike.
The Frenchman, 22, scored 22 goals for the Bundesliga side last season and has already been tied to both Liverpool and Chelsea in rumours
He says Old Trafford chiefs have established contact in the last 48 hours to gather the necessary information about a former Paris Saint-Germain player tipped to move for €100m (£85m).
There had also been warning that the Gunners were making their advance ahead of Man United had been floated when CNN Portugal, via The Mirror, had reported that the player's agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, had met with officials from the Emirates Stadium last night.
The whole situation had taken a turn before that once it began to be reported that Sporting were in fact holding out for an €80m (£68.1m) fee.
Gyokeres was said to be 'furious' with the stance of his club as for a long time, even dating back to the winter, it was suggested the Swede had a 'gentleman's agreement' in place that would mean they would lower the asking price to €69m (£59m) and not block his exit path were a suitable suitor to emerge.
If Arsenal - with the ability to offer a stronger shot at the Premier League title at present plus Champions League football - are advancing, it is all bad news for Man United, who have already lost out on top target Liam Delap to Chelsea.
