Manchester United could be set to make a giant leap forward in their drawn-out pursuit of a striker in the coming months, according to reports - with publications in Portugal stating that the Red Devils are set to 'make an offer' for Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres after positive talks surrounding a potential move to Old Trafford over the past 24 hours.
Gyokeres enjoyed the best season of his individual career last time out, winning the double with Sporting after recording 39 goals in just 33 Primeira Liga games, taking his tally in the top-flight to over a goal-per-game. That has piqued interest from elsewhere, and Premier League giants United could steal a march on other interested clubs by making a formal offer for the 'best striker in the world'.

The report by Portuguese outlet Record, via SportWitness, states that Gyokeres and his agents 'insist' on the version of events that were laid out by current Manchester City director Hugo Viana, who left for Pep Guardiola's board earlier this year.

Viana promised Gyokeres could leave for a set amount of €70million (£60million) including add-ons, but with a change in Sporting's recruitment team, the Primeira Liga champions now want €80million (£68million) to let him leave.
'Game-changing' Gyokeres has seen his agent meet with United, and his representatives are prepared to present an offer to the Champions League outfit within the 'next few hours' as an exit from the Estadio Jose Alvalade looks increasingly likely.
That is despite Sporting president, Frederico Varandas, stating that Gyokeres was never promised that he'd be able to leave for the smaller fee, with the club chief saying:
“You should know me better by now. Threats, blackmail, insults, they don’t work with me. And I can guarantee one thing, Viktor Gyökeres will not leave for 60 plus 10. He won’t leave (for that amount) because I never promised him that and with this game that the agent is playing, the situation will only get worse.”
Gyokeres clearly wants the move, with his agents likely not wishing to engage in any talks unless the Sweden star wanted to move to Old Trafford.
And the saga will continue until Gyokeres chooses his next location as Ruben Amorim aims to improve his attacking ranks after a dismal campaign last time out in the Premier League.
