Heading into Victor Wembanyama’s third season in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs feel like a strong bet to make an impact addition this offseason. Boasting the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, the Spurs could either stick and pick the best prospect not named Cooper Flagg. Or, they could try trading it for a proven player who helps them win now.
The Spurs may be taking the latter approach to things.
According to Mike Scotto of Hoops Hype, the Philadelphia 76ers have engaged in trade negotiations with the Spurs with an interest in landing the No. 2 overall pick. Already holding the third overall pick, the 76ers have reportedly zeroed in on four different prospects thus far. Yet, landing the second pick would guarantee Philadelphia gets its top target.
So far, VJ Edgecombe and Ace Bailey have either visited or will be visiting with the 76ers, and it’s possible Philadelphia wants to make sure they secure their guy. While the 76ers’ motivations are clear, what about San Antonio’s?
Are they just looking to take advantage of their strong draft position and want to get an extra piece out of Philadelphia by moving down to No. 3? Or do the Spurs have a bigger move in mind?
