Manchester United are reportedly in the running with Chelsea and Liverpool to snap up Eintracht Frankfurt's striker Hugo Ekitike this summer.

The Red Devils have earmarked Ekitike as a potential recruit in their quest for a new spearhead, as Ruben Amorim sets about revamping his frontline early into his tenure.

Amorim has kicked off his summer dealings by sealing a £62.5million transfer for Wolves' forward Matheus Cunha. Bryan Mbeumo is tipped to be hot on the Brazilian's heels from Brentford in the coming weeks, as talks over a transfer fee progress.

However, it's believed that Amorim is keen to inject fresh talent upfront to round off a revamped attack following last season's lacklustre goal tally.

United had initially set their sights on Liam Delap as their top striker target after the 22-year-old netted 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich Town last season.

But with Delap opting for a switch to Chelsea, the decision-makers at Old Trafford shifted their focus towards Mbeumo, reports the Express.

Despite this, United remain committed to bolstering Amorim's squad with another striker and have been heavily linked with Sporting's Viktor Gyokeres, Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Jean-Philippe Mateta of Crystal Palace.

Sky Germany reports that Ekitike is also on the shortlist and is such a strong contender that United have made a formal approach. It's suggested that the Old Trafford chiefs have thrown their hat in the ring after reaching out to Frankfurt recently and gathering information on a possible deal.

The report suggests that Chelsea and Liverpool are also in the running to sign Ekitike, who carries a hefty £85m price tag. It's uncertain whether United will be able to meet such a steep asking price this summer, given their financial constraints due to missing out on European.

Sporting president Frederico Varandas' public declaration that he'll demand more than the previously reported £59m for Gyokeres might have shifted United's attention.

However, a deal involving Ekitike could prove even trickier, considering the higher fee and the competition from other clubs. United need to offload players to raise funds before they can bring in any more new faces beyond Cunha and Mbeumo.
