Down, set, hike! America’s team is getting ready to touchdown on Netflix! That’s right, the streaming service recently announced that it would be releasing a 10-episode documentary about the Dallas Cowboys called America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys this summer. This news comes after the success of Netflix’s other documentary, America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. To learn more about the new series — including when it will be available to stream and how it ties to the cheerleading doc, keep reading.

What is Netflix’s Dallas Cowboys documentary about?

America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys is expected to tell the story of how Jerry Jones went from oil tycoon to NFL team president, owner and general manager of one of the world’s most recognizable sports teams. It will also feature some of the legendary past players, such as Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders, as well as head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer. The docuseries is directed by Chapman and Maclain Way, known for Wild Wild Country.

“A man who bet it all. A series of calculated risks. A team meticulously designed for greatness. America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys is the definitive story of the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones’ impact on NFL history,” reads Netflix’s description of the show.

“What began as a daring purchase led to the assembly of the iconic ‘90s football team—a decade-plus journey, led by Jones’ intrepid business moves, that revolutionized global sports and resulted in three NFL titles. Through first-hand interviews and never-before-seen footage, this series unravels the dramatic twists and turns on the road to the Cowboys becoming the most valuable sports franchise in the world.”

How will the doc tie into ‘America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders ’?

The only thing that America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys and America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders seem to have in common is the fact that they are both documentaries on Netflix that follow some part of the Dallas Cowboys organization. Because of that, there might be some crossover, thanks to featured people like Charlotte Jones Anderson, Jerry’s daughter, and the Dallas Cowboys’ executive vice president and chief brand officer who works closely with the cheerleaders’ director Kelli McGonagill-Finglass and head choreographer Judy Trammel.

“As you can imagine, Jerry casts quite a large shadow. He also cast a huge opportunity for so many of us, but particularly for me,” Charlotte told The Dallas Morning News of her father in October 2015. “My dad never saw gender growing up. He always pushed me and believed I could be President of the United States one day if I really wanted to. I never dreamed I would be in the family business. Our family business was oil and gas, so that was not exactly my mission coming out of school. Then, all of a sudden, he turns around and buys the Cowboys. Then he asked me, while I was in D.C., to come down and help him out. And when I got down here, the only thing that he said was, ‘I just want to be around people that I can trust … that will lie awake at night trying to figure out how to solve the problem, how to help us stop this leaky machine and help turn it around.'”

“When I walked in here my first day, I looked at my dad and said, ‘Where do you want me to start? What do you want me to do?’ And he just looked at me and he said, ‘Find a way to stop losing money and whatever you do, don’t tarnish the star.’ And I don’t think I saw him again for a month,” she continued. “That’s a pretty broad call to action, and I just tried to take advantage of every opportunity that’s been presented.”
