New Boston Celtics rumor suggests payroll slashing could extend into 2026

A new rumor claims the Boston Celtics will not be pressured into slashing a bunch of payroll this summer. And they could wait until next year’s trade deadline to find the most favorable deals.

The Celtics are facing a serious financial dilemma ahead of next season. If they maintain the status quo, they could be paying over $500 million (including taxes) for their roster. That is why the assumption around the game is that they will be selling off key pieces of the roster over the next couple of months to slash payroll.

However, NBA insider Jake Fischer claims the organization is willing to take a very patient approach to their problem. “The Celtics are said to be conducting their mid-June business with confidence that they can make deals that bring positive value back to Boston,” he wrote in a new post for the Stein Line.

Fischer claims the team is not “desperate” to shed salary before the 2025-26 season kicks off. Furthermore, they have given rival teams the belief that they are willing to wait until February’s trade deadline to complete their payroll slashing plan.

Recent rumors have suggested Jayson Tatum is the only player the Celtics are unwilling to part with. However, Fischer suggests there are four members of the roster Boston would like to hold on to as their core going forward.

“Boston is believed to be open to listening to any player on its roster not named Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown,” he wrote. “I’d put Payton Pritchard and Derrick White right behind those two franchise cornerstones as extremely hard-to-get as well.”

The Celtics are reportedly so high on White that the NBA insider claims it would take the same sort of deal that sent Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks (four first-round picks) for Boston to part with the two-way guard.

“White, meanwhile, has been so essential to Boston on both sides of the floor that it sounds as though the Celtics would need their version of the offer that blew away Brooklyn and forced the Nets to part with Mikal Bridges to entertain surrendering him,” Fischer reported.
