The Patriots will unveil a statue of Tom Brady on Aug. 8 prior to their preseason game against the Washington Commanders, it was announced Thursday.

The statue is the latest way for the franchise to honor the quarterback, who led the team to six Super Bowl wins. In 2023, Brady was the centerpiece of a halftime ceremony, a game in which he kicked off the proceedings by ringing the bell atop the Gillette Stadium lighthouse.

And in June 2024, Brady was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame with a night of celebration at Gillette. During that ceremony, team owner Robert Kraft announced plans for a statue to honor Brady, one he said would be 12 feet tall.

“Last year we commissioned a local sculptor to create a larger-than-life, bronze statue to perpetuate the legendary legacy of this once-in-a-lifetime player,” Kraft said.

The statue is the first the team has had built for any player.

Brady is one of several NFL legends to be honored with a statue in retirement. Dan Marino (Miami), Peyton Manning (Indianapolis), Johnny Unitas (Baltimore), Jim Brown (Cleveland), and Vince Lombardi (Green Bay) have been immortalized in the cities where they found their greatest success.

Brady spent the first 20 years of his 23-year career with New England, winning six Super Bowls, four Super Bowl MVPs and three NFL MVP awards.
