Liverpool have continued their pursuit of Florian Wirtz, aiming to secure the Bayer Leverkusen midfielder as their marquee signing following their Premier League victory.

Negotiations have been progressing over recent weeks, with a potential British-record transfer proving no easy feat to finalise.

Wirtz turned down Bayern Munich and Manchester City to facilitate his preferred move to Anfield, and since then, this has been the top priority for both Liverpool and Leverkusen. The German club have stood firm on their £126m valuation of their star player, recently rejecting a £113m bid.

Despite subsequent claims suggesting an agreement has been reached, reports suggest that both sides have dismissed these as premature, reports the Liverpool Echo.

However, even if it's too early, it doesn't mean that the deal won't be concluded in the initial stages of the summer transfer window.

Sky Sport reporter Florian Plettenberg anticipates the two clubs reaching an agreement, with the necessary paperwork being signed and approved by the relevant authorities in time for next weekend, June 21-22.

The midfielder, currently on holiday after the German national team camp completed their June fixtures, is thus expected to undergo his medical within the coming week.

This is news that all Reds fans will gladly welcome, nearly a month since the disclosure of Wirtz and his family's meeting with Liverpool came to light.

Fabrizio Romano had previously asserted late on Tuesday night that an agreement had been reached.

While neither club has confirmed this, he was pulled into the discussion under Plettenberg's post this afternoon and as part of his defence, he boldly declared 'Wirtz is a Liverpool player'.

Adding to the speculation that an agreement was in place, German publication BILD suggested knowledge of final financial terms for Wirtz's move to the Premier League.

Liverpool would be shelling out €140m (£118m), comprising the fixed fee and achievable bonuses. As such, Moises Caicedo to Chelsea's £115m British transfer record would be surpassed.

There would also be an additional €10m (£8m) tied to the deal should 'extraordinary' bonus clauses be met.
