Ruben Amorim secured upper hand in power dynamic with Man Utd ace after Matheus Cunha transfer, he's in complete control– opinion

Ruben Amorim has established himself in a more comfortable position over one key first-team Manchester United player after the Red Devils signed Matheus Cunha.

Matheus Cunha’s transfer to Manchester United was all but confirmed after the Red Devils triggered the 26-year-old’s £62.5m release clause earlier this month.

However, United’s deal for Cunha from Premier League side Wolves was subject to the Brazilian attacker receiving his visa and passing his medical requirements.

The Red Devils on Thursday confirmed that the transfer had now been completed and Cunha has officially become a United player under manager Ruben Amorim.

Ex-Wolves ace Cunha, who inked a five-year deal with the Red Devils this month, was a top target for United manager Amorim in the summer transfer window.

The United star has been away on international duty with Brazil and Cunha has impressed United fans with his performance against Paraguay on Wednesday.

Ruben Amorim’s signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves puts Alejandro Garnacho in a precarious situation at Old Trafford

Alejandro Garnacho has faced an uncertain period at Old Trafford after the Manchester United winger’s problematic relationship with Ruben Amorim.

The 20-year-old Spain-born attacker was dropped to the bench for the 2025 Europa League final between United and Tottenham at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.

Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench in the second half and impressed with his cameo, but United fell to a 1-0 defeat to Spurs in the Europa League final in May.

The United star pulled no punches after the final and Garnacho expressed his disappointment towards Amorim dropping him to the bench for the Spurs match.

Garnacho’s case with Amorim wasn’t helped any further after his brother, Roberto Garnacho, suggested the Red Devils talent had been “thrown under the bus.”

Amorim had reportedly told Garnacho that he could leave in the summer and United’s signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves might have sealed the winger’s fate.

Why Matheus Cunha’s transfer from Wolves could signal the end of Alejandro Garnacho’s time at Man Utd under Ruben Amorim

Cunha is tipped to play as the left-sided No 10 in Amorim’s tactical system for United and Alejandro Garnacho’s opportunities might have become even more limited.

Garnacho lacks the ability to play as a wing-back in the system and the Argentina international faces tough competition for playing as one of the two No 10s.

Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo has also been linked with United and his arrival at Old Trafford would only further limit the playing time of Garnacho under Amorim.

Garnacho has been linked with a move away and United would benefit from pure profit due to the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

It could be out of the Argentina star’s hands over whether or not he stays now after Amorim has one-upped him by getting a ready-made replacement with Cunha.
