How Rashawn Slater is Approaching Contract Talks With the Chargers

Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh addressed the ongoing contract talks on Tuesday.

I speak on behalf of I would think everybody in this organization, we support Rashawn and we know what he's trying to accomplish for himself and his family. We're all in support," Harbaugh said.

With this week's minicamp practices being mandatory, this was the first time Slater had been seen at practices open to media members this spring.

Slater said Thursday that he spent most of the offseason training in Dallas like he normally does.

"For me, just prioritizing always my training, stuff like that. Yeah, that's really just kind of been my thing, from Day 1," Slater said. "Like I said, my agent has been handling all that for me, so it's been pretty low-stress.

"I'm not really super concerned about it, just prioritizing getting right and trying to be the best player I can be," Slater added.

Slater has been an elite player on the field in recent years, especially in 2024 when he earned Pro Bowl accolades for the second time in his career.

Slater posted a 90.9 overall Pro Football Focus grade this past season, one of just two tackles and six offensive lineman to hit that mark among players with at least 500 snaps. In the past four seasons, only 12 total players have reached at least a 90.9 grade.

And Slater did so while being on an island roughly 65 percent of the time, according to PFF data.

He explained Thursday how he approached the 2025 offseason.

"A lot of it's just getting healthy, that's the big thing. Get the body feeling good," Slater said. "Trying to feel like a rookie all the time, which has been going good. I feel good.

"Also just refining technique, there's always something. There's a lot of things from last year where I look at the tape and go, 'Wow, that could have been so much better.'

"So definitely pass protection, there's a few key things here and run blocking, too," Slater added.

Time will tell what happens with Slater and the Chargers.

Slater said Thursday that his focus will not turn to more training and getting himself ready for the 2025 season.

And he made it clear that contract talks likely won't be on the forefront of his mind this summer.

"I have no concern about it at all," Slater said. "Realistically speaking, I've known for a long time, it's how these things go.

"It's not something that's bothered me," Slater added. "It's just the business of football so I have full confidence. I feel good."
