New documentary to follow former NBA player’s life and heart transplant experience at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - A new documentary will be chronicling a former NBA player’s life and his experience having a heart transplant at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Former NBA Plater Scot Pollard received a new heart at VUMC in 2024. He had been chronically ill with advanced heart disease, according to Vanderbilt Health.

“Scot’s transplant was one of a world record 174 heart transplants performed by the Vanderbilt Transplant Center in 2024,” Vanderbilt Health said.

The new documentary, titled “Heart of Pearl,” will showcase Pollards life journey and his heart transplant experience at VUMC, from his first evaluation for the transplant to his surgery and early recovery days.

Vanderbilt Health said during the filming of the documentary, they gave ESPN “unprecedented access” to video Pollard’s heart transplant.

Pollard played basketball for the University of Kansas before playing for five different NBA teams, including the Pistons, Kings, Pacers, Cavaliers and Celtics.

“Heart of Pearl” will premiere on ESPN on Sunday, June 15 at noon CDT.
