Jets Experimenting With New Offensive Wrinkle: ‘Work in Progress’

The New York Jets have been desperately searching for a weapon to pair with Garrett Wilson on offense.

Perhaps the answer has been under their nose the entire time. “After the team walkthrough to start practice, the offensive line went through gameday receiver warmups and caught deep passes from the quarterbacks,” Jets team reporter Ethan Greenberg shared on Thursday, June 12.

NFL Insider Connor Hughes of SNY jokingly asked head coach Aaron Glenn if “Any of the offensive linemen showed him anything?”

“Absolutely not,” Glenn responded with a laugh. “Obviously I have been a part of a team that used our linemen to catch passes, and that is going to be a work in progress.”

Coach Is Pulling Things From His Lions Past

The Detroit Lions have earned a reputation over the last couple of years with their offensive creativity. Dan Skipper is one of the Lions’ offensive linemen who have been used in packages where he has been an eligible receiver.

“The Lions run more trick plays than anyone in the league, and they went deep in their playbook in a 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills. The play was for Skipper to peel off and catch a pass from the 9-yard line. Nobody covered the 330-pound lineman, of course, and he got into the end zone for the score,” Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports wrote.

“It wasn’t Skipper’s first career catch. He had a 4-yard gain last season. But it was his first career touchdown. That’s a cool moment for a seven-year NFL veteran whose only notoriety was being a part of an officiating debacle last season (or being congratulated by Dan Campbell for him throwing up),” Schwab added.

Jets Offensive Coordinator Credited for Having a Big Role in Lions Success

Ben Johnson, former Lions OC and current Chicago Bears head coach, has gotten a lot of credit for his innovative offense.

However, throughout this offseason, people in Detroit have pointed to Jets’ current OC, Tanner Engstrand, as a big contributor in that department.

“I leaned heavily into him the last 2 seasons,” Johnson told Jets senior reporter Eric Allen. “[Engstrand] is completely ready for this next challenge.”

Lions head coach Dan Campbell showered Engstrand with praise last year when discussing what he brings to the table.

“He is bringing a lot more ideas to the pass game in general,” Campbell said. “I see a lot of growth … He was always a bright guy.”
