Jarell Quansah is a centre-half who remains on Newcastle United's radar as they look to add to their squad this summer.

The Liverpool defender looks set for a move from Anfield after failing to establish himself under Arne Slot as the Reds powered to the Premier League title.

Quansah started the first game of the 2024-25 season under Slot at Ipswich Town but was replaced by Ibrahima Konate at half time and had to watch most of the campaign from the sidelines.

Although he made 25 appearances in all competitions, only five of those were starts in the Premier League. The academy product started the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle, playing at right-back in place of the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley, but is a centre-back by trade.

Newcastle made a firm enquiry about Quansah and his Liverpool teammate Joe Gomez last summer as they looked to bring in a centre-half amid the Marc Guehi saga.

A deal never materialised but Eddie Howe remains a fan of both players and with concerns over whether they will get dragged into another long-running affair with Guehi and Crystal Palace this summer again, the recruitment team have a list of alternative targets.

Quansah is attracting attention from German side Bayer Leverkusen, with The Athletic reporting that the Bundesliga side are considering a £40m move for the 22-year-old.

Leverkusen are rebuilding their squad after the exit of Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich, while Mario Hermoso has also left after his loan spell from Roma.

The price tag may be something that puts Newcastle off returning for Quansah, however. They see Guehi as a better player and better option, and believe they can strike a deal for £40m for the Palace captain as he only has 12 months left on his contract.

That said, they were willing to pay around £45m for Gomez last summer as part of a PSR-focused switch with Anthony Gordon, before pulling the plug on the deal and exploring different options that included selling Elliot Anderson and signing Odysseas Vlachodimos.

One thing United are clear on is that any new signings this summer must come in and improve the starting XI and while Quansah has struggled to break past Konate as Virgil Van Dijk's centre-half partner, he is highly rated by both Newcastle and Liverpool.

Quansah was called into Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad in April ahead of the likes of Everton's Jarad Branthwaite, but did not feature.

He missed out on a place in the squad for the June internationals with Trevor Chalobah and Ezri Konsa chosen ahead of him.
