TBR Football can exclusively reveal that Tottenham Hotspur could still have a chance to sign Bryan Mbeumo ahead of Manchester United.
Spurs confirmed on Thursday that Thomas Frank has been appointed as their new head coach, replacing Ange Postecoglou after his sacking.
The Dane did a fantastic job at Brentford during his time there, and he helped develop many incredible players too.
One of them is Bryan Mbeumo.
How Tottenham could hijack Manchester United’s move for Bryan Mbeumo
TBR Football’s chief correspondent, Graeme Bailey, understands that Tottenham are still in with a chance of landing Mbeumo from Brentford.
Manchester United have been keen to sign the Cameroon attacker for a while now, and the player is interested in a move to Old Trafford too.
TBR Football revealed earlier this week that Manchester United were closing in on Mbeumo, but things could change if Spurs enter the race to sign him.
Bailey exclusively told TBR that Tottenham’s ability to offer the Brentford star the chance of staying in London could make a difference.
He said: “We need to keep an eye on the Mbeumo situation. It is a thing.
“Manchester United are very confident the player is theirs and the player has made it clear he is ready to join United, but we need to keep an eye on that one – I am told that if the player is offered the chance to stay in London, it could play a part.
“As said, United are still firm favourites, but Tottenham do like the player – they did before Thomas Frank arrived, so for them to come in for him would not be a huge shock. Indeed, within football, there is an expectation that they will.
“The question is now if United can get this done and dusted. Spurs think there is a need for another player on the right.
“But, from what I am told, the belief at Spurs is that Frank is a fan of this squad. They think he will love working with it – someone like Brennan Johnson is going to love playing for Frank.”
Bryan Mbeumo vs Brennan Johnson’s stats in the Premier League compared in last two seasons
Mbeumo and Johnson are very different players.
The Brentford star has the ability to consistently make things happen, while the latter has become more of a ‘right place at the right time’ kind of player inside the box.
Mbeumo will certainly be a player who will excite Tottenham fans, but how do his numbers fare against Johnson’s in the Premier League in the last two seasons?
Games Goals Assists Minutes per goal or assist
Brennan Johnson in 2023/24 and 2024/25 65 16 16 133.5
Bryan Mbeumo in 2023/24 and 2024/25 63 29 15 122.22
Stats in the Premier League
As the numbers show above, Mbeumo is better than Johnson despite playing, on paper, in a smaller team over the last two years.
At Tottenham, there is every chance that Mbeumo will perform even better, and the fact that he would be working under Frank again would be a bonus.
Staying in London is a definite attraction, but if Mbeumo joins Tottenham, he can play in the Champions League as well, which is something that Manchester United cannot offer.
