Aston Villa linked transfer for with Chelsea player who 'is going to have a remarkable career'

Aston Villa have been credited with an interest in Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, who could leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

Petrovic spent last season out on loan under Liam Rosenior at French side in Strasbourg, and he enjoyed a profitable campaign in which his temporary club finished seventh and earned a chance to qualify for the Europa Conference League.

Rosenior said of Petrovic towards the end of the season: “The more I see him here, the more he smiles, and the happier he is. It’s to his credit. He has a beautiful young family who have settled in the area, and he’s going to have a remarkable career. I love working with him and hopefully somehow we can still collaborate in the future. Whether it’s here or elsewhere in five years, I’d like it to be next season.”

The Serbian international signed for the Blues from New England Revolution in the summer of 2023, and he made 23 Premier League appearances in his first season after Kepa Arrizabalaga had been loaned to Real Madrid. Petrovic got the nod for the most part over Robert Sanchez, but the tables turned this season and Petrovic made way.

It remains to be seen what future he has back at Chelsea, who have since signed Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal for £20m and still have Kepa to come back into the equation after his own successful loan spell with Premier League rivals Bournemouth this past season. They've also signed Mike Penders from Genk for around £17m.

Towering goalkeeper Petrovic, 25, like most Chelsea players these days, signed a staggeringly long deal upon arriving in 2023 - his seven-year contract runs until 2030, but it remains to be seen what Chelsea have planned for him ahead of the new Premier League season.

In the meantime, Villa have been linked with a move. It's uncertain what Emiliano Martinez's immediate future looks like currently, with no offers put to Villa but clearly interest from Europe, further afield and also closer to home in Manchester United. They've already parted with Robin Olsen and are in the market for another goalkeeper for their squad at any rate.

Leeds United, after another goalkeeper following promotion back to the top flight, have also been linked alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers.
