Liverpool make Wirtz the most expensive player in Premier League history with record deal

Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen have reached a verbal agreement on a British record deal for Florian Wirtz, talkSPORT understands.

The total package is worth £116.5million with £100m guaranteed after weeks of talks between the two clubs.

Wirtz has already agreed personal terms and will undergo a medical next week.

The deal is set to eclipse the previous British transfer record of £115m that Chelsea paid Brighton for Moises Caicedo in August 2023.

Naturally, it also shatters the club record £85m Liverpool paid Benfica for Darwin Nunez in 2022.

Arne Slot's side have already brought in Wirtz's former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5m as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The figures dwarf the solitary £14m Liverpool spent on Federico Chiesa last summer, with Slot being backed heavily in the transfer market.

It is fair to say the Dutchman deserves it too, having won Liverpool's 20th league title and second of the Premier League era in his debut season.

In Wirtz, the Premier League will be welcoming the 2023/24 Bundesliga Player of the Year and Germany's new talisman.

The 21-year-old has notched 34 goals and 33 assists over the past two seasons as he led his side to their first Bundesliga title.

Playing a variety of positions across the front line, including as a striker, Wirtz emerged as one of the game's best young talents and was being very publicly chased by Bayern Munich.

Manchester City also made a move for the Germany No.17, but it quickly became clear that his sole preference was Liverpool.

Liverpool could yet make more blockbuster additions this summer with Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola and Newcastle striker Alexander Isak both on their radar.

talkSPORT understands the Reds will look to offload Nunez as a way of funding their summer spending spree.

The 25-year-old is drawing interest from Saudi Arabia, with Al Hilal contacting Liverpool on Monday to ask for the conditions of a deal.

Al Nassr had a €70m [£59m] bid rejected in January and Liverpool are using this number as a yardstick for valuation.

However, Liverpool do not plan to sell Luis Diaz this summer, talkSPORT understands.

Reports have suggested both Diaz and Diogo Jota could follow Nunez through the exit door.

Clubs in Saudi Arabia as well as Barcelona are interested in Diaz, who is pushing for a new deal on Merseyside.
