BREAKING Liverpool agree£116m Florian Wirtz transfer and set new British transfer record

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Florian Wirtz that will shatter the British transfer record.

The Reds have been locked in negotiations with the Bundesliga side for the past couple of weeks, with Leverkusen holding out for their €150million (£126m) valuation of the star.

However, according to The Times, the two parties have agreed on a new British record of £116m. The fee is split, with Liverpool paying an initial £100m with the £16m coming in the form of add-ons.

It will eclipse the current £115m British record which was set in August 2023 when Chelsea paid Brighton & Hove Albion for Moisés Caicedo.

Liverpool had seen previous offers of £109m and £113m rebuffed before they managed a breakthrough. Wirtz will now undergo a medical and finalise personal terms on the deal.

The Reds will have to wait until next week to sign Wirtz with the first transfer window of the summer slamming shut on Tuesday evening at 7pm - and it will reopen on Monday (June 16) - due to the inaugural Club World Cup.

With Liverpool not participating in the showpiece stateside, they didn't face a race against the time to get the deal done before the first deadline, unlike Prem rivals Manchester City who are making the journey.

Wirtz had been linked with both Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but has chosen the Reds.

And Bayern's Sporting director Max Eberl told Sky Germany: "If I'm honest, I don't know if we could have paid what Liverpool are apparently paying now. Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player. We could have imagined signing him. But when a door closes, another opens."

The youngster's rise has been meteoric at the BayArena - and he was named the Bundesliga Player of the Season last campaign.

"You have to give special players like Flo the possibility to do special things on the pitch," Xabi Alonso gushed when speaking about his star.

Wirtz won't be the only former Leverkusen star at Anfield next season with Jeremie Frimpong already been signing from Leverkusen for £29.5m.
