Florian Wirtz's jersey number at Liverpool options as transfer fee agreed

Florian Wirtz is on the verge of becoming a Liverpool player after an agreement was reached with Bayer Leverkusen - although he will have to find a new shirt number at Anfield.

The Reds could be set to break the British transfer record after finally agreeing a deal with Leverkusen. The transfer will see Liverpool pay a guaranteed $135.5 million, while their Bundesliga counterparts could receive an additional $21.7M in add-ons, bringing the total to $157.2M.

The deal comes after Liverpool had been locked in discussions for the 22-year-old over the past couple of weeks, having emerged as the favorite for his signature ahead of Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Wirtz is now expected to pen a long-term deal at Anfield, following in the footsteps of former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, who became the first new signing of the summer.

Liverpool fans will no doubt be keeping an eye out for the club’s official announcement, and for a first glimpse of what number Wirtz will be wearing at Anfield.

A lot has already been said on that matter after it was claimed the German international wanted the No. 10 that is currently claimed by Alexis Mac Allister - something which was angrily denied by Wirtz.

But what numbers are available to Liverpool’s newest signing?

Available shirt numbers for Florian Wirtz

There aren't too many high-profile numbers available to Wirtz, and the 10 and 17, which he currently wears for club and country, are off the table, with Mac Allister and Curtis Jones laying claim to those.

In terms of numbers not currently claimed by first-team players, 6, 12, 13, 15 and 16 are all available should Wirtz want a number under 20.

Looking further down the list, 23, 24, 25, 27, 28 and 29 are all up for grabs, while Ryan Gravenberch (No. 38) is the only player to have claimed a number in the 30s.

Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips' expected departures will free up the No. 46 and No. 47 shirts, with Stefan Bajcetic (No. 43), Calum Scanlon (No. 48) and Kaide Gordon (No. 49) the only other players to have numbers in the 40s, while 50, 51, 52 and 53 are all taken.

And if Wirtz wanted to make a real statement, there is of course the No. 66 now up for grabs after Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure for Real Madrid.
