John Terry fears he will have to give up on his dream of being a manager - and insisted English bosses do not get the same chances. Former England captain Terry still works part time at Chelsea ’s academy.

But he has never been able to land a job as a manager and his ultimate ambition was to manage his old club. Terry had a spell as an assistant at Aston Villa, has come close to getting jobs but says he has got frustrated by not getting a chance.

Chelsea legend Terry said: “My passion has not diminished at all. Of course I want to be a manager. It’s time consuming, I’m watching games, re-watching games and I’m doing courses, I’m spending so much time waiting for this opportunity.

“The longer it goes on, the more likely I will just have to draw a line and say: ‘you know what? I’m going to focus on other things.’ I’ve captained Chelsea, I’ve captained my country and led those teams to many successes. I don’t why I’ve not had an opportunity, I really don’t.

“I don’t think English managers get the same opportunities. I think we get blown away by foreign managers that have dominated leagues which are not at the top level and yet still get the opportunities in the UK and the Premier League.

"I’ve interviewed for clubs in the lower league and the feedback has come back and they say I have no experience for a start and my three years at Villa kind of means nothing. I absolutely loved my time at Villa. I feel I am ready. I know I am ready. I’ve done all my badges and I’m watching so much football.

“I have a good balance of life, I’m in a happy place. I’m doing some work away, I’m spending a bit of time with the family and part time at Chelsea working with the kids so I’ve got a really nice balance in life.”

Meanwhile, Roman Abramovich still keeps in touch with Chelsea’s all-conquering legends. Former Chelsea captain Terry revealed he has dialogue with the exiled former club owner forced to sell as part of Government sanctions on Russian oligarchs.

And Terry praised Abramovich for everything he had done for Chelsea and the area through the pandemic before he was stripped of the club because of the Ukraine war and links to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Abramovich said this week he would like to be allowed to say goodbye to the Chelsea fans and remains close to former players through his confidant Eugene Tenenbaum.

Terry said: “Roman is a lovely guy and he’s done many great many things and Chelsea is one of many of them. I speak to him through Eugene. It was an incredible time.

"I had a very close relationship with Roman, with Eugene, with Peter Kenyon who I also am still in touch with. They are all really good guys and I’m really saddened by what’s happened.

"I really want to know those guys are OK because the love, the support, what he did for the football club, what he did through the pandemic and for the NHS was incredible, remarkable and people have forgotten that very quickly.”
