Despite being pretty well stocked at the back, rumours persist that Arsenal are still in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer.
It was widely reported that the Gunners held talks with Dean Huijsen before the Bournemouth defender opted to join Real Madrid. Now, Jorrel Hato’s name is back on the agenda.
The Ajax left-back was first linked with Arsenal in January 2024, when he was just 17, but went on to sign a long-term extension at the Johan Cruyff Arena shortly after. Now 19, capped six times by the Netherlands and recently voted Eredivisie Young Player of the Season, Hato continues to be admired at the Emirates.
Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have been in touch with Ajax to discuss his availability.
From the outside, persuading him to make the move to London could be tricky. Riccardo Calafiori and Myles Lewis-Skelly are both already competing for minutes in his favoured role.
Perhaps Arteta sees Lewis-Skelly transitioning into midfield, his natural position, or maybe Calafiori will be used more centrally, with someone like Jakub Kiwior potentially moved on to make room. We’re speculating, of course.
Knowing Arteta, he probably just wants another left-back. As last season showed, you can never have too many.
It’s worth noting that Chelsea, as with Huijsen, are also said to be sniffing around Hato. One to watch.
