Fabrizio Romano: Man Utd ‘making phone calls every day' over deal to sign ‘extraordinary’ star

Manchester United are making phone calls daily to stay updated on Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The Red Devils remain keen on reuniting manager Ruben Amorim with the Sweden international at Old Trafford this summer and are closely monitoring Gyokeres’ developing situation in Portugal.

The 26-year-old striker’s relationship with Sporting has reportedly become increasingly strained in recent days, after club president Frederico Varandas claimed no promises were made to let Gyokeres leave for a reduced fee this summer.

The Swedish international is said to have had a gentleman’s agreement allowing him to depart the Lisbon-based club for offers around €70m (£58m), despite his official release clause being closer to €100m (£84m).

He remains a target for Manchester United

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, said the situation between Gyokeres and Sporting remains 'tense' amid ongoing interest from United:

“It's a tense situation. Let me also say a sad situation for a player who made history at Sporting with goals, with titles. Being part of the history of Sporting forever, to be in this situation would be sad.

“So let's see if they can find a solution together. Remember that Gyokeres remains a target for Manchester United.

“So Man United keep calling for Gyokeres on a daily basis to understand the situation, the price and all the rest.”

Gyokeres, who joined Sporting from Coventry in the summer of 2023, has developed into one of the most prolific strikers in world football during his two years in Portugal.

The 'extraordinary' 26-year-old has scored 97 goals in 102 appearances across all competitions and helped lead Sporting to back-to-back league titles.

Man United could face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal, as well as Juventus and clubs in Saudi Arabia, in their pursuit of the Sweden international.

Gyokeres is under contract with Sporting until June 2028 and is reportedly pushing for a weekly salary of £300,000 at his next club.
