PSG to Copenhagen: Nine high profile West Brom friendlies as fans await more pre-season announcements

In recent years, Albion's pre-season campaigns have seen them take on sides from the EFL, rather than more glamorous clashes overseas.

Albion have got a number of fixtures for this season to announce - and they could well head abroad for pre-season games for the first time in many years.

However, there was a time where Albion were lining up against some of Europe's top teams, and there was one season where Albion played one of the best sides in European football.

Back in 2016, prior to what would be the penultimate season of Albion's lengthy run in the Premier League, Tony Pulis took his side to Austria, as he did for many of his pre-season campaigns at various clubs.

And while in Austria, they went up against giants PSG, then managed by Unai Emery.

And Albion gave a side that was littered with top talent a run for their money.

Albion went ahead in the game in the 15th minute, as Saido Berahino, one of the hottest young prospects in English football at the time, drove forward and saw his low cross turned into his own net by ex-Chelsea and Arsenal man David Luiz.

PSG eventually turned it around, with second half goals from Adrien Rabiot and ex-Spurs man Lucas Moura in what was Emery's first game in charge of the French club.

Around that time, Albion did feature in a number of friendlies against high profile opposition and other European sides, which is some way from their recent pre-season calendars.

here is a bit of a look back at some of those games:

**July 2019 - Villarreal 3-0 Albion**

New signings were on show and youngsters such as Dara O'Shea were introduced - in what was Slaven Bilic's first game in charge.

**July 2017 - Slavia Prague 2-1 West Brom**

Another Austria trip under Pulis, with James McClean on the scoresheet in a narrow defeat.

**July 2015 - Red Bull Salzburg 3-1 West Brom**

Yet another Austria clash, as youngster Adil Nabi scored in a 3-1 defeat.

**August 2014 - West Brom 1-3 Porto**

There was a time where Albion played bigger pre-season games at home - and in 2014 they welcomed Porto.

Jonas Olsson cancelled out a goal from Casemiro before Albion went on the lose the game.

**July 2013 - Hannover 96 2-1 West Brom**

Albion's form in these bigger pre-season games wasn't great, and in 2013 they lost 2-1 with Craig Dawson netting an own goal.

**August 2013 - West Brom 2-0 Bologna**

Back in 2013, Albion welcomed the Serie A side as Nicolas Anelka and Marcus Rosenberg netted first half goals

**July 2012 - Copenhagen 0-3 West Brom**

In 2012, they headed to Denmark and beat Copenhagen 3-0 at the Parken Stadium, with goals from Steven Reid, Shane Long and Gabriel Tamas.

**August 2011 - Olympiacos 2-2 West Brom**

Back in 2011, there was another memorable one in Greece. Graham Dorrans and Jermone Thomas netted in an entertaining draw.
