Ex-NFL star wanted by police on attempted murder charge

MIAMI – Police in Miami-Dade County, Florida, are seeking to arrest former NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown on a charge of attempted murder last month, according to reports.

An arrest warrant for Brown accuses him of attempted murder with a firearm, calls for him to post a $10,000 bond and remain under house arrest until trial, The Washington Post reports. The criminal charge against Brown stems from an altercation outside a celebrity boxing event in Miami last month, after which the former NFL star was detained by police before being released.

On May 16, officers responded to a report of gunshots being fired outside the Brand Risk Warehouse in Miami. In video posted to social media, Brown is seen fighting with several people in the parking lot before gunshots can be heard after the scuffle.

Bystanders at the scene told authorities that Brown was the shooter, according to the warrant. Brown was found with no weapon on him when searched by authorities, who also found two bullet shell casings and an empty gun holster at the scene, according to the warrant.

However, authorities later obtained video footage that appeared to show Brown instigating the fight by punching another man. He is also seen appearing to take a security officer’s gun, and cell phone video shows two gunshots being fired as Brown approaches the man he had punched, according to the warrant.

Following the incident, Brown took to social media to explain what happened, saying he was attacked by several men who were attempting to rob him.

“I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me,” Brown wrote in a post to X on May 17. “Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED. I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me. I will keep you all posted step-by-step on the process.”

This marks the latest in a yearslong string of legal troubles for Brown.

In May 2024, Brown filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as he owed nearly $3 million to at least 8 creditors, according to documents filed Monday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Southern District of Florida. In October 2023, Brown was arrested outside of his Florida home after a warrant was issued accusing him of unpaid child support. And in June 2020, he pleaded no contest to charges of felony burglary and battery, as well as two misdemeanor charges, and was sentenced to two years probation and 100 hours of community service.

Brown’s star NFL career ended abruptly in 2021 when he walked off the field mid-game while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He won the Super Bowl the previous year with legendary quarterback Tom Brady and the Bucs in 2020.

The 7-time NFL Pro Bowler also played one season for the New England Patriots in 2019 after playing his first nine seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers, which drafted him in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
