Matheus Cunha could'unlock'Man United teammate's true potential in Ruben Amorim's tactical system, it's missing spark– opinion

Matheus Cunha’s arrival at Old Trafford from Wolves could be the missing puzzle piece for one of Ruben Amorim’s key first-team Manchester United players.

The Red Devils made a statement of intent early in the summer transfer window after a woeful 2024-25 Premier League season for Manchester United.

United announced the signing of Matheus Cunha earlier this month after the Red Devils triggered the £62.5m release clause in the player’s Wolves contract.

The official confirmation from United over their signing of Cunha was made on Thursday after the deal was subject to visa approval and registration procedures.

Cunha signed a five-year deal with United and the 26-year-old ex-Wolves ace was in Manchester over the weekend to complete his medical ahead of his move.

The Brazil international is the first major summer signing for Ruben Amorim and former Wolves forward Cunha was a top target for United in recent months.

What role will former Wolves ace Matheus Cunha play in Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd tactical system and why is it important?

Matheus Cunha impressed for Wolves last season and the Manchester United summer signing netted 17 times in 36 matches for his former Premier League side.

The former Atletico Madrid and RB Leipzig player is tipped to play a key role in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for United in the 2025-26 campaign.

Amorim’s men were toothless in the final third last season and the former Sporting CP boss watched the Red Devils show poor end product in their lacklustre season.

Cunha has already shown his versatility as an attacking option ahead of his United transfer after he represented Brazil during his country’s World Cup qualifiers.

Carlo Ancelotti praised United star Cunha after the 1-0 win over Paraguay on Wednesday, with the former Wolves ace deployed in the No 10 role.

Cunha is expected to play as the left-sided No 10 in Amorim’s system and the Brazil forward’s presence could finally be the catalyst for supporting one player more.

Patrick Dorgu can now build an effective partnership with Matheus Cunha in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system for Man Utd

United manager Amorim has preferred to play Diogo Dalot at right wing-back and shifted Patrick Dorgu out as the main left wing-back for the Red Devils.

Patrick Dorgu is capable of playing on either side of the flank, but the 20-year-old United defender is still taking his time to adapt to the Premier League.

The Denmark and United full-back arrived at Old Trafford in the January transfer window after the Red Devils signed him from Serie A outfit Lecce.

United completed the transfer in a deal worth £25m, including a further £4.1m in add-ons, and Dorgu did impress early in his spell at the Premier League club.

However, Dorgu has struggled with his end product and the Danish full-back could now spend the 2025-26 season building a rapport with Cunha on the left side.

Cunha’s presence and versatility in the No 10 role could be the missing component for Dorgu to play more freely with a player who is also built for Amorim’s system.
