Newcastle United stepped back from the astronomical wage demands of Bryan Mbeumo earlier this month.

The right winger asked, via intermediaries, to quadruple his Brentford wage packet to join Newcastle at the start of the window. But Newcastle, despite a willingness to talk about a fee with Brentford, walked away from the deal with Manchester United thought to be in the box seat.

However, news emerging from the capital on the back of Thomas Frank's appointment at Tottenham Hotspur could see the forward head across London.

The Cameroon international would then have a manager he knows and trusts but wages north of £200,000 could still be the price to pay if Tottenham are to pip Man United to his signature.

Those talks are now thought to be under way with Spurs as the window continues to hot up. The Magpies did their homework on the 25-year-old and, as reported on Chronicle Live back in January, watched the star multiple times. However, they were far from alone around he negotiations with a string of Champions League clubs and Saudi Pro League sides offering big bucks.

Newcastle are reluctant to break their wage ceiling for top earners with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Anthony Gordon on close to £150,000 per week. Eddie Howe's stance on big demands has already been made clear despite an initial hope of signing the Brentford ace.

Howe, asked if the club could make marquee signings this summer, had said after the final game of the season against Everton: "If he's already established, I think the wages and the financial package becomes difficult for us, speaking honestly, so as much as we would want it.

"Of course it's much easier for me to bring in a ready-made, established, world-class player, but I don't think we've done that since I've been here because we haven't been able to financially.

"We're not in the position of the other clubs, we have to bring them in and then try to make them that. I don't envisage that changing because of the PSR restraints on us."

Spurs can not only offer Mbeumo big wages but also his ticket to the Champions League after they hoisted the Europa League last term.
