As the team looks to retool around its core of Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr., Avdija has emerged in multiple conversations as a name of interest.
Reports say that Memphis is doing “due diligence” on the 24-year-old Portland Trail Blazers forward ahead of the NBA Draft.
Executive VP and GM Zach Kleiman, alongside new head coach Tuomas Iisalo, appears focused on building a balanced, high-IQ team around the franchise’s three core players.
Avdija had a breakout year with the Blazers after arriving from the Washington Wizards last summer. He averaged 16.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists on 60.5% true shooting and shot 37% from three over his last 148 games.
Sources believe acquiring Avdija could be “the easiest, most financially sensible play” for the Grizzlies in the current market.
The asking price won’t be light. Portland values Avdija highly, and the Grizzlies would likely need to include multiple first-round picks and promising young players.
One hypothetical trade proposal has Memphis sending Brandon Clarke, GG Jackson, a protected 2026 first-rounder, a 2028 first-round pick swap, and multiple second-round picks in exchange for Avdija.
