Manchester United ought to snap up Victor Osimhen this summer rather than Viktor Gyokeres, according to Rio Ferdinand.

The former United star believes the Nigerian forward would be a better match for his old club. The Red Devils have been lacking in the goal department this season, with Rasmus Hojlund only managing to bag four goals in the Premier League.

Joshua Zirkzee, last summer's big-name signing, has also failed to make his mark at Old Trafford, netting just three league goals in 32 appearances.

With a total of 44 team goals - the second lowest tally in the Premier League outside of relegated Southampton, Ipswich and Leicester - it's clear that United need to bring in a goal machine to the north west in the upcoming months.

Ruben Amorim is keen to bring in new blood to revamp his inherited squad. United have already sealed a £62.5million deal with Wolves for Matheus Cunha, and are trying to hammer out terms with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo.

Sporting CP hotshot Gyokeres, who helped his team secure the Primeira Liga title this season with 39 goals and eight assists, is another name linked with the Red Devils.

However, Ferdinand reckons Napoli's Osimhen is a superior choice, given his wealth of experience compared to the 27-year-old, reports the Mirror.

Speaking to The Mirror, Rio Ferdinand delivered his verdict: "I think Gyokeres, everyone's talking about him. Again, I think if I'm looking at the market now and I had to pick him or Osimhen, I'd probably pick Osimhen because of that experience.

"And he's shown he's done it in multiple leagues now. And he's done it internationally as well. I think he's a top-class number nine who, again, the young players will be able to learn from. I'm not saying that Gyokeres would fail. I'm just saying that if I had a preference, I would go there."
