‘When a door closes, another opens’ — Bayern Munich make peace with Florian Wirtz miss

Liverpool FC is on the verge of completing a blockbuster move for Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz — which could see a record transfer fee of up to €150M by latest reports.

The fee alone could have been enough to deter Bayern Munich. The German record champions have been reeling from the sting of failing to convince one of the rising stars of the next men’s national team generation.

“If I’m honest, I don’t know if we could have paid what Liverpool are apparently paying now,” Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said in comments captured by Sky Sport DE journalist Kerry Hau (via @iMiaSanMia). “Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player. We could have imagined signing him. But when a door closes, another opens.”

Prompted to identify Athletic Club winger Nico Williams as a Bayern target, Eberl deflected.

“Many names. Many names,” Eberl stated.
