The Spurs are making their first addition of the offseason. Timberwolves assistant coach Corliss Williamson is expected to join Mitch Johnson’s staff, [according to NBA insider Marc Stein](https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1933534208439562684).
After promoting Johnson to head coach following Gregg Popovich’s move to the front office, San Antonio had an opening on their bench. The franchise has decided to fill it with an experienced assistant and former NBA player.
Corliss Williamson had two stints with the Kings and also played for the Pistons, 76ers, and Raptors over a 12-year career in the league. The former Sixth Man of the Year and NBA champion had a short, largely unsuccessful turn as head coach at Central Arkansas before joining Sacramento’s coaching staff. Since then, he was a lieutenant for Frank Vogel in Orlando and Igor Kokoskov in Phoenix before landing in Minnesota to join Chris Finch’s staff two years ago. Now, he’ll make the transition to San Antonio.
It’s unclear if there will be more changes to the coaching staff, but this seems like a good addition. As a former pro player, Big Nasty should bring a different perspective to a group that has a nice combination of experience and youth. The ties to Minnesota could lead to speculation that the Spurs might be targeting one of the Timberwolves’ free agents, but there have been no reports about it at this point, so there’s no need to hypothesize about who that could be, if anyone.
The Spurs will play the California Classic and the Las Vegas Summer League in July, following the draft and the beginning of free agency.
