Liverpool have reportedly learned the price they will have to pay if they want to sign Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon.
A major benefit of a scenario where Liverpool sign Gordon is that Everton fans will be absolutely incensed by it. The 24-year-old spent his Academy days with the Blues and only left the club after 11 years in 2023 when he joined the Magpies.
This season, Gordon scored nine goals and assisted seven and although that is effectively nine fewer goal contributions than our own Luis Diaz managed out of position, the Scouser does have the advantage of being four years his junior.
Liverpool are reportedly unwilling to sell Luis Diaz (which I support) but are simultaneously unwilling to offer him a new deal which the Colombian needs given he is sorely underpaid for a player of his quality and age.
According to Capology, the former Porto star is only on £55,000 per week and while that doesn’t seem accurate, it has been widely reported that the player is unhappy with his current contract and if that figure is even remotely accurate, it’s easy to understand his position.
If Liverpool do sell, they will need a young, talented replacement and Gordon ticks that box.
Liverpool learn that it will take an offer of between £75m-£80m to sign Anthony Gordon this summer
Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown claims that Liverpool will need to spend big to sign Gordon after he signed a new deal since almost joining the Reds last summer.
“*It’s a move that would be dependent on a lot of factors,*” he told Football Insider.
“If Luis Diaz was to leave Liverpool, whether it’s to Barcelona, the Saudi Pro League or somewhere else, they will be in the market for a left-winger.
“Anthony Gordon came very close to joining Liverpool last summer when Newcastle were being forced to sell some players because of PSR regulations.
“Liverpool have been keeping tabs on Gordon and remain interested in him.
“Newcastle, ideally, do not want to lose him as he’s a key man in Eddie Howe’s side.
“He signed a long-term deal last October after all that speculation over his future, so to convince Newcastle to sell you’d be looking at £75-80million.
“It looks a difficult deal to do, it will take a huge fee to persuade them to sell.
“With Champions League football, their PSR situation is looking a lot healthier and they’re under no real pressure to sell their prized assets.”
