The Maine Celtics will have a new head coach for the second straight season with a familiar face taking over at the helm in 2026. Michael Scotto of Hoopshype reports former Celtics guard Phil Pressey is set to be named head coach of Boston’s G League affiliate.
Pressey has been a player enhancement coach in Boston for the past two seasons after his playing career ended. He also played for team president of basketball operations Brad Stevens during his rookie season as coach in Boston.
Pressey, 24, made the Celtics roster back in 2013 after going undrafted and played two years in Boston before stints with the Spurs and Suns in 2015. Ultimately, Pressey played most of his pro career overseas before calling it a career in 2022 and joining the Celtics coaching staff. He defied the odds to make it to the NBA after starring at Missouri in college, posting 3.2 points and 2.9 assists per game in 148 NBA appearances.
Pressey will take over a Maine Celtics squad that made it to the G-League East Finals last year. Baylor Scheierman and JD Davison played big minutes in Maine last season and it’s likely Boston’s upcoming draft picks and two-way players will join Pressey in Maine for a portion of next season.
