Barcelona have re-entered the race to sign Athletic Club star Nico Williams, dealing a significant blow to Arsenal ’s hopes of landing the highly-rated Spanish winger this summer.
The 22-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s most coveted young talents. According to reports in Spain, the Catalan giants received a “very positive” response from the winger’s camp during a meeting on Friday, with Williams reportedly open to a move to Camp Nou.
This development comes as a major setback for Arsenal, who have long viewed Williams as a priority target to strengthen their left wing. Manager Mikel Arteta is said to be a long-time admirer of the explosive forward, whose pace, dribbling ability, and creativity align perfectly with the Gunners’ attacking style.

Arsenal were previously optimistic after reports suggested Barcelona had cooled their interest in Williams, focusing instead on alternatives such as Liverpool’s Luis Díaz. However, Barça’s renewed efforts have now disrupted the North London club’s carefully laid transfer plans.

Williams, who has a €58 million (£49m) release clause in his contract with Athletic Club, was one of La Liga’s standout performers in the 2024/25 season, contributing 11 goals and seven assists across all competitions. His form has attracted interest from several European giants, including Bayern Munich, who have also identified the Spaniard as a key target in their summer rebuild under Vincent Kompany.
Adding to Arsenal’s challenges, Athletic Club are actively trying to keep hold of their star man. Club president Jon Uriarte recently reiterated their commitment to building a competitive squad around Williams, emphasising his importance to their “winning and interesting project.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta had been spearheading discussions around a possible move for Williams, as part of the club’s broader efforts to add depth and quality to their attack.
Barcelona’s interest is especially frustrating for Arsenal given the La Liga side’s ongoing financial difficulties. Despite these constraints, Barça have consistently found ways to attract top talent. The prospect of playing alongside Spanish national teammates like Lamine Yamal and Pedri, combined with a preference to remain in Spain, could further tip the balance in Barcelona’s favour.
The Gunners are also battling competition on other fronts, with Real Madrid now monitoring Williams and Barcelona also keeping tabs on Arsenal-linked striker Viktor Gyokeres of Sporting CP.
