Arsenal have "totally closed" deal to sign £55m star, "impossible" for Real Madrid to intervene …

Real Madrid have admitted defeat in the pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, according to Spanish outlet AS.

The Spain international has been long linked with a move to the Premier League, and Arsenal have eventually won the race to sign him.

The Gunners have agreed to pay £55 million for the highly rated midfielder. A deal is ‘done and sealed’, as per journalist David Ornstein.

There has been some talk in the Spanish media that Madrid could hijack the move, but AS have now dismissed the possibility.

The publication claim that Arsenal have ‘totally closed’ the operation for Zubimendi. Madrid have taken note of the ‘discouraging news’.

It is ‘impossible’ for Los Blancos to sign him anymore, and their focus could shift to Manchester City star Rodri for next summer.

Rodri will enter the final year of his contract in July 2026. Los Blancos could seek to negotiate a cut-price transfer at that point.

Zubimendi is a superb acquisition for Arsenal

The 26-year-old has been a long-term target for the Gunners.

Liverpool came almost on the cusp of signing him last summer, but the midfielder decided to continue with Sociedad for another campaign.

He has now agreed to join the Gunners from his boyhood club. Sociedad plan to formalise the transfer in early July due to accounting purposes.

Zubimendi is a fantastic acquisition for Arsenal. He has brilliant positional sense and likes to control proceedings from the number six role.

The Spaniard also possesses a good aerial presence. He does not shy away from engaging in tackles and has impressed with his recovery pace too.

Additionally, Zubimendi is a forward-thinking holding midfielder. He is someone who likes to pass through the middle rather than sideways.

Arsenal have got themselves a quality upgrade in midfield. Zubimendi should be an undisputed starter in the number six role for the club next term.
